A series of three documentaries called 'Story of God' narrated by Prof Winston is due to be shown on BBC 1 TV on Sundays at 7pm. The first of the series will have a little bit of Hindu presentation. Today I went to a viewing of the second documentary that focuses on the three Abrahamic faiths. The quality of filming, sound, and the use of interviews from the experts was very good but at the end of the showing one is left wondering as to what conclusion this series can possibly offer? In the second part there was one comment that came through in a very pointed manner against Monotheism. The atrocities committed in the name of religions would make some suggest that 'We have 'ONE' God too many'. Suggesting that Monotheism generates division and bloodshed. A very strong comment to make and I think it will stick in the minds of the viewers. The first part of the series focuses on Polytheism (and Hinduism will be examined in this section!). The second part I viewed today was on Monotheism. The third documentary is called 'God of the Gaps.' I suspect the final conclusion may be that God can only exist in 'gaps' left behind by rational enquiry. I have been interviewed (as the Hindu contributor) for the first part of the documentary which will be broadcast on Sunday 4th of December at 7pm. I have done my best to present some of the more interesting aspects of Hinduism. I just hope that some of this material get through and has not been left on the cutting room floor : )

Hi,

Though the Abrahamic faiths claim to be monotheistic, they

are not. Moses tells the Pharaoh that the God of the Isrealites

wants the Isrealites to leave Egypt. This implies that the God

of the Isrealites is different from the God of the Egyptians.

Where is monotheism here?

Hinduism says that there is only one God, who is called

by different names by different people. And Hinduism is called

polytheistic !!!

Even granting the claim that the God of Moses and Abraham

is " the " God, all the three Abrahamic faiths should not have

any fight. Their problem is in the acceptance of prophets,

rituals, practices, and other minor theological differences.

So they will continue fighting with themselves and with others

even if they are founded on polytheism or even the literal monotheism in the

manner of Hinduism.

Even the various sects of Hinduism were having bitter

fights till a few centuries ago. The real problem in all

religions is not even the acceptance of prophets or rituals.

It is people using religion as a means to attain wealth,

power, and other worldly things. The problem is not with

religion as such. If religion could not be used for this

purpose, other ideologies like communism (Vietnam, ...),

racism (Nazi, ...), economic differences (Naxalite, ...),

language (Bangalore riots, ...), culture (Kalistan, ...),

etc were used to justify wars, rioting and terrorism. This

has nothing to do with religion. It is religion, which has

to be rescued from these destructive forces.

With regards,

Gomu.
