Guest guest
'Root of all Evil' by Professor Dawkins was shown on Ch4 last night. Compared to the marvellous series of books published by Professor Dawkins on the theory of evolution, the documentary was a major let-down. It presented a simplistic one sided point of view in such a narrow context that we suspect even a hard-line atheist would cringe. Creation vs Evolution The programme targeted the Abrahamic faiths and its belief in the theory of Creation by interviewing a television evangelist from the American Baptist belt! Surely the programme could have found many mainstream Christians in the UK who would have balanced this view by commenting on the possible allegorical nature of this presentation. Miracles The programme attempted to blast the Catholic religion for promoting belief in miracles. Almost every Advanced level books on philosophy of religion offer a more balanced and well thought critical approach to this aspect to all religions. Every youth studying philosophy of religion is well aware of the problem on the issue of miracles and could have done a better job of exploring this issue in a more interesting and balanced manner. Atrocities in the name of religion One of the criticism of religions can be the long list of atrocities committed in the name of religions. Every human discovery from 'fire to nuclear power' has offered benefits and dangers to mankind. They have been used and often misused. The fact that they have been misused does not take away their validity. Discovery of spirituality is no exception. Religions are highly emotive topics and can be the reason for perpetuating serious atrocities yet this does not take away their validity. Professor Dawkins in his rush to denounce religions seems oblivious to such balanced point of view. A pity! Islam Just as getting an American TV evangelist to discuss Christianity on a rational format could be viewed as seriously flawed, getting a fanatic Jew converted to Islam to present a balanced point of view of Islam was seriously flawed. Professor Dawkin's keenness to interview such 'fanatics of faiths' very clearly exposes his own anti-religious fanaticism. jay lakhani Vivekananda Centre London
