Dear Ramanath Babu, Namaskar. No, you are not wrong about the date. Historians have fixed Sankaracharya as somewhere around 788AD. However spiritual adherents prefer 509BC as Sankara's birth year. Some of the latter would opt for 44BC. As per the theologists Buddha's birth should be put back by another three to four hundred years. Actually while referring to Sankara we may be referring to two persons, Adi-Sankara and Abhinava Sankara. The above is as per an introduction to the book "The Life of Sankaracharya" brought out by the Ramakrishna Mission. Kindly do read it, it makes for fascinating reading. The Madala Panji can be questioned on another ground also. The Jagannath Temple is historically recorded as being consecrated in the 11th Century AD by Choda Ganga Deva. However myths speak of King Indradyumna and his

queen Rani Gundicha who are not historical figures. It seems that the Jagannath Temple has an unrecorded history and may have been temporarily put out of action due to certain reasons before being revived. The Jagannath cult in Orissa took shape after the Mahabharata era and could be 5000 years old. It is said that the mortal remains of Sri Krishna (his navel) along with remains of his funeral pyre was washed ashore in the beaches of Orissa. These remains were worshipped by a tribal race of Orissa, descendants of the tribal king who accidentally shot an arrow at and killed Sri Krishna. These tribals even now have an important role in the worship of Lord Jagannath. While going through the book, "Journey into Kashmir and Tibet" by Swami Abhedananda I find that Jesus supposedly came the way of Punjab and after visiting Puri (where he studied the Vedas under Brahmins) went North (Rajagriha,

Benares) to study Pali and Buddhism before pushing into Nepal. So this again raises fresh questions because Sankaracharya is supposed to have put an end to Buddhism in India. He then travelled westward into Persia where a pond called Isha Talao (he performed ablutions here) draws devotees every year. It is also written how monks of the Nath sampradaya spoke highly about an Ishainath to Sri Vijay Krishna Goswami who could easily recognise that it was Christ they referred to. Ishan is also another name of Lord Shiva, thus leading to the possibility that the Essenes community to which Jesus belonged could be Ishanis, devotees of Lord Shiva! It is said that Christ liked to meditate like Indian yogi's. Probably we have to wait till the second coming of Christ to know what really happened. Regards,Jagannath. All the Shankaracharya Maths have come into existense during his life time only. And Jesus came to earth 800 years before Adi Shankara's birth. Then how come that Jesus visited any Shankaracharya Math? "Our ideal is not the spirituality that withdraws from life but the conquest of life by the power of the spirit." - Aurobindo.
