Guest guest
Dear Friends Twenty years ago when I went for a survey with RK Math Bangalore volumnteers, there was abject poverty and misery in the villages of Shivanahalli and Ragihalli (twin villages within 40 kms range of Bangalore) - which borders the Banneraghatta forests (The famous animal sanctuary is very near to this place). The tribals and the villagers had only one source of income - working in the stone quarries and hardly make any earning to meet the daily needs. Recently since I returned to India for good from Malaysia, I visited them again. But today the situation is completely different. The place is green and most inhabitants of the villages are economically sufficient. Not only that the women have taken control of the house managing their needs but are also enterpreneurial, thanks to the micro-credit programmes. All this is possible because of one Swami of the RK Mission, SWAMI VISHNUMAYANANDAJI, who has been working silently almost single handedly since the last two decades. He got them electricity, a school (where syllabus is determined by the teachers & not the Govt!), Free Medical camps every week end, a full fledged hospital, School students being provided nourishing food every day, Grown up children are taught vocational training, farmers are taught rain harvesting, assisted them to build tanks to preserve water and so many other incredible things he has achieved. Today the villagers of the 16 hamlets around, are beaming with confidence & pride. Swamiji also is a mobile encyclopaedia of the plants, herbs and animal life. He has planted trees from almost every continent/country including China and Brazil! Swamiji has put together a nice website (www.RKMission-halli.org) highlighting the work done there and note that some of the contents of the web site changes regularly with his updates on Nature, downloads and other features! The downloads of Sw. Ranganathanandaji's lecture, Sw. Purushottamananda's songs are rare collections indeed! Also interesting is some of the local herbal plants and their medicinal values. Swami can also arrange to show some wildlife, as is appropriate (Note that Elephants visit this place almost every day). Those of you who want to stay there for a couple of days or stay quiet for a day, for a quiet retreat, can do so with due permission from the swami himself (His contact no. +91-80-7858022) or his assistant Sw. Hridananda. You can send your emails to him - rkmblr or shivanahalli (Attn: Swami Vishnumayanandaji). Guest guest
Hello, There is a school being run by the Ramakrishna Mission in Shivanahalli. Under the guidance of the swamiji educational CDs are being brought out so that it complements the students curiosity and also supplements teachers deficiency in the class. This work was started because it was observed that the students were intersted in their surroundings and questioning about them and go beyond the prescribed school syllabus. It was felt that these rural students could also fare well in their areas of interest. This work is being done in a generic way so that the CDs can be distributed for free/nominal cost to other schools and can also be easily translated into other languages. IT REQUIRES AROUND 3 TO 4 HOURS OF WORK PER WEEK BY A VOLUNTEER AND CAN BE DONE REMOTELY AS WELL. Please the RKMission-halli website to know further and register if you are interested. Ideas from similar projects done in different parts of the world are being used in this project. So read thru the web page and get in touch if you are involved in such a project and cannot contribute, but guide the project. regards, --Sunil
