Guest guest
Revered Maharaj, I agree with you wholeheartedly. America had not totally degenerated into the greedy civillisation that we see today and the people were broadminded and open to spirituality.Of course during Swamiji's second visit some of the defects of the American society troubled him. However many Americans are realising the effects of an overtly materialistic culture and are progressing rapidly towards vedantic thought. This change is happening in Europe also sometimes taking the extremes of people retreating into the forests, maybe not for spiritual pursuits but just as a form of protest. Perhaps India needs more of materialism to be sick of it. But how much more? We seem to have already crossed the limits. The pleasures of a simple, uncluttered life do not appeal to us anymore. We would rather wallow in the world and cry rather than turn our backs to mundane pleasures. Once we were in the company of Most Revered President Maharaj, then Vice-President, and talking of the lucky few who were wealthy enough to escape the folds of misery. Just then a rich devotee entered the room and poured out his problems with tears in his eyes. After he had gone Revered Maharaj turned to us and smiled meaningfully. We realised the folly of our discussion. Respect & Regards, Jagannath.
