Guest guest
Commission on Integration and Cohesion I was interviewed by BBC News 24 this afternoon on the launch of the above initiative by Ruth Kelly. The Muslim contributor to the dialogue insisted that the problems we see arise due to political reasons. The Hindu response does not agree. It is the Religious dimension to our cultural diversity that shows up as the problematic issue. When problems arise in the name of Religion they can only be put to rest in the name of Religion. Political or diplomatic or military methods will just not work. The religious resolution to this religious issue is firmly embedded in Hinduism. It is called Religious Pluralism which insists that spiritual progress can be made in a variety of different modes. They allow for religious as well as non-religious modes for making spiritual progress. It is important to promote this idea of comprehensive pluralism in the education system if we want to resolve this issue on a long-term basis. Only then can people of different faiths and no-faith backgrounds live with each other in harmony and without having to threaten each other or without feeling threatened. A secular resolution to a problem that has arisen in the name of religion will not work long term. Hinduism holds the key of how religions can be again made into a cohesive force in society rather than the divisive force they have turned into. regards Vivekananda Centre London
