Guest guest
Most Bengali Brahmins eat not only fish but also mutton. Kali Puja in Bengal is celebrated with the sacrifice of goats. It is not as common now as it used to be. Swami Vivekananda once wanted Asthami puja celebrated in Belur Math with the sacrifice of 108 goats. He wanted the youth of India to get accustomed to blood. The incident never took place because Sarada Ma personally intervened and stopped it. Goat sacrifice was common in Dakshineswar when Sri Ramakrisna was there. He personally did not like the practice. I do not know if goat sacrifice is still performed there. On my many visits to Dakshineswar I have not seen any. I believe recently a law was passed that prohibited the sacrifice of animals in religous rituals. Somdev Roy
Guest guest
Namaskar to all, I am writing this mail to basically inform you that animal sacrifice is no longer performed at the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple. During Kali Puja this year I saw and heard on TV during the live telecast of Kali puja, this piece of vital information from the head priest at Dakshineshwar himself. Needless to say this not only gladdened my heart but I am sure the hearts of all those who hate to see killing of animals for any reason whatsoever. I would also like to share a small piece of information with you all. When I last visited Dakshineshwar, about 10 years ago I had vowed in front of Maa Kali herself that I will never set foot inside her temple again for as long as animal sacrifice continued. Now that it is confirmed that animals are no longer killed in Dakshineshwar, I am determined to make one last journey to see Maa Bhavatarani once more before I die.
