Guest guest
It is mentioned in Sri Holy Mother's life that, while she stayed at Nahabat in Dakshineswar Mandir, she used to keep live fish in a vessel hanging from the ceiling. It appears therefore that Sri Ramakrishna used to eat fish at least then. However it is clearly stated in his life that he never used to take prasad consisting of cooked meat of sacrificed goat at Kali Mandir. He used however to touch his finger to it and then give a tilak of it on his forehead or touch his tongue so that Maa should not be angry. It is also mentioned that he made his neice Laxmi Devi to take this prasad once. It is clear he never had any taboo about non-veg eating. It is mentioned in Gospel that he once said that a person who sincerely worships god is much better even though he eats pork, than one who is vegetarian but does not worship God. His spiritual son, Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj has also clearly stated, when one of his disciple asked a question about non-veg eating that it is irrelevant for spiritual growth; what is needed is Shradha(faith) and Sadhana (spiritual practices). It is well known that Swami Vivekananda used to eat meat. But it is no use comparing ourselves with such spiritual stalwarts who were Nitya Sidha as nothing pollutes Ganga. In Sri Sri Matri Mandir at Joyrambati as also at Sri Maa's place in Kolkata, fish is still served with food on some days. In Bengal, fish is considered as a fruit of water and many Brahmins do take it. This practice is considered as normal in that part of Bharat. Guest guest
If I may chip in. Diet differs from region to region depending on the environment and circumstances. Eg if a person lives in Alaska, we cannot expect them to be vegetarians since no vegetables are available there. Also we do not know for certainly what was the food practices of our ancient ancestors. So my way of going about it is, just follow your tradition. If traditionally your community was vegetarian, then follow that and vice versa. -- Lead me from the unreal to the Real;Lead me from darkness to Light;Lead me from death to Immortality.-Brihadaranyaka Upanishad-
