Guest guest
Namo Shri ramakrishnaayanamaha Friends Swami Vivekananda wrote a comprehensive article on food habits covering vegetarianism, eastern food habits and western food habits..etc.It answers almost all the aspects of vegetarian/nonvegetarian food habits. As i understand gist seems to be 1) One must remain healthy in the positive sense.(i.e not mere absence of disease but excellent fitness. 2)you will find equaly mentally high calibre people amongst both varieties. 3)Choice of food must be in accordance of work one does(i.e if one has desk job,he may be better off eating moderately. If one has hard labor and choice of food can be high protein food in as little quantity as possible eg.non vegetarian food.) Perhaps thats why Brahmins are largely vegetarian 4)He mentions, unless equivalant rich vegetarian food developed by nutritionists, non vegetarian food may be the practical option for most of the working class people.otherwise one may be inadequately nourished. he also warned that too much of discussion on food matters may hijack our religion to kitchen. Guiding principle is,food for nutrition not for any other reason. Occassional indulgence on festivals may be ok but not the kind of living to eat. But most importanat thing to remeber may be, offer it to god before eating.I personally found it very beneficial. At the end of day, bottom line maye be " have you grown spiritually " rather what we ate that day. as per sacrifices..I think its a complex subject..Its easy to condemn it as barbarious and inhuman. But there is certainly more to it than meets the eye Shashi
