Guest guest
Dear List On Thursday we had arranged a seminar on Hinduism for all Religious Education teachers in the whole country. The seminar was held at the Neasden temple. A few hundred teachers attended the seminar. We managed to displace some serious misconceptions parading as Hinduism and replace them with the more dynamic aspects of Hinduism that sometimes do not get any exposure in the education system. Aspects of Hinduism like Spiritual Humanism (or divinity of mankind), religious pluralism, or links between Hinduism and science. The reaction the seminar has produced can be summed up as per the enclosed email from one courseleader who brought a coachload of teachers from the West country. ..........jay We had a fantastic day yesterday – the trainees were so impressed with the visit, the organization, the honesty about teaching and misconceptions. I was pleased to hear some of the messages explained so cogently that I try hard to convey to the trainees to redress some of their misconceptions and own experience of being taught Hinduism or observations of. In particular the focus on The Caste System, issues of reincarnation, interpretation of Murtis and nature of God. Addressing misconceptions, sharing food together and engaging in professional dialogue was invaluable and cannot be likened to any previous training I have attended. One colleague from Primary said that she had only met one Hindu before (from a group not to be named) but this day had enabled her to see Hindus in a totally different light and was so reassured to have a chance to discuss issues relating to beliefs and practice and receive such useful advice. It was an experiential venture into part of our pluralistic heritage.
Guest guest
Absolutely wonderful and superb .... The fact that these teachers will now teach thousands of students will not only clarify various misconceptions about hinduism but will also hopefully help spread the message of pluralism that is so needed in the world we live in.
