Guest guest
Dear all, Thank you for the recent posts, especially the discussions on Caste system by Jay and Raj Sundaram. Both of your were scholarly in your discussions and the argmunets you put forward were splendid in their own. Yes, many people from the Himalayas to the Fiji islands or people of hindu descents and diaspora elsewhere in the world is aware of the caste system as an inherent part in our religion. The westerners truly and deliberately try to equate the caste system as the the only and major hallmark of Hinduism. We can not deny or escape this fact. From nepal to the rest of South Asia , the Hindu society has been under a violent rift over this caste politics. Many of the so called lower caste people have been tempted to conversion to Buddhism, Christianity and Islam highlighting the discrimination meted out against them by the so called higher class Brahmin and Thakurs and the like in Hinduism. This is the truth and we are facing this. But at the same time of late, this violent discrimination based on caste system is on the wane and we are trying to eschew the social ills this system has caused among ourselves. It doesn't do much even if Manu is not the sole central figure in determining as to what is what in Hinduism. Hinduism was never a faith system developed by a single prophet and no sinlge voice here can be accepted as deterministic. There are countless diverging and dcontrary phiilosophies from Charvak to Manu each purporting their subltle differences in ideological stance. So even if the Vedas did not envisage the caste system based society or it was a social labour division not be meant to go along hereditary line, the truth is that caste system is only asociated with hinduism and it has been going along hereditary line. This needs to be reformed and reformed for the good of Hindu community worldwide or else we will always be targetted by some who like to do this to us. While we can only assure or appease some by saying that it was not there in the beginning but was later developed by some Brahministic scholars to drive home their selfish interest, the painful and bitter pill can not have a soothing effect. We have to accept and improve because somewhere we must have erred in the past, may it be with Manu or me . Krishna
Guest guest
Dear Friends, It has been my utmost pleasure to read different comments illuminating different opinions on caste sytem and its functionality in past and present. From my point of understanding, I see a biased representaion of the system in the western world. I was shocked to hear such commennt from westen scholars. It was great to know that RKM London has been able to remove study of caste system as Hinduism from UK. It would be great if Ramkrishna Mission takes a similar endevor in United States. Moreover I believe people in India should also be given the opportunity to know the system in which they survive. This will not only educate them to forbid age old practises and prejudices which demeans humanity but also embrace the real essence of the vedic philophies. As a student of sociology I understand that caste sytem is a good case study of social structures and its functions. But it should not be mixed up with the vedic philosophies. Moreover I have observed that many people donot happen to know how it started and how it was modified. Therefore my objective of the research is to understand that phenomenon as a sociological study. I guess that will help to make informed judgement. Thanks for all you support. Regards Monalisa

Guest guest
Dear members (Followers of Shri Ramakrisna) It was indeed an illuminating discussion on 'Caste System' by many members. The truth is Vedas did not envisage the caste system based society or it was a social labour division not be meant to go along hereditary line, But the fact is that caste system is only asociated with hinduism & unfortunately going along hereditary line till today. Leave Manu, It was Britishers who endorsed the Caste-System for their benefit & rule easily on India; and after independence Its most of our selfish Politicl Parties who want this to continue for their advantage. Late Acharya Vinoba Bhave (True Gandhian) used to describe the caste system in Marathi as " Bapache Pret " (Father's Dead Body); implying Till it was alive hewas a father (As might be it was a necessity in the past). But today (now) as there is no significance, its like a dead body, & must be burnt. At the same time, Its a propoganda by most of the foreign Media to highlight a biased picture about Hinduism and India. Good efforts are being taken to reduce the evils of this Caste System by Spiritual & Social organisations Like RKM & many others in India and Abroad. But still a long way to go..... Regards to everyone.
