Milena and other friends,

I have a hard copy of this book published(or printed)

by Sri Aurobindo Ashram Press. I first heard of that

book while reading " Meditation and Spiritual Life " by

Swami Yatishwarananda.

Since the Swami spoke of this book, it is quite

possible that many RKM monks take inspiration from it

just like our own dear, dear Swamiji liked Imitation of

Christ very much.

Now, I read this book and to tell you all, this is one

of the most inspiring books in my life and it shows a

surprise similarity between the Christian and Hindu

ways although the similarity could be better

appreciated by somebody who have understood Vedanta

well.

Surprisingly, to whomever Christian friends I asked in

India, none showed any awareness and even interest in

this book. I even went to some churches in India and

they didnt even know that such a book existed!

I later on found out that it is mainly the catholics

who take these books little more seriously and

Protestants simply told me, " we dont read this book as

we r not catholics " . I am really really surprised.

What a block headedness!! If, I a Hindu, can read and

take inspiration from this, what stops these

Protestants and other non catholic Christians?

I only wonder whether the situation is same in US/UK?

Hi everyone,

Another such book by a Christian saint is " Imitation of Christ " by

Thomas Kempis. Not sure if the book is available online. In the

Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda (Vol9 Pg292) there is a verse by

verse correlation of a part of " Imitation of Christ " with Hindu

scriptures.

Hi Biswatosh, Thanks for the interesting reply. I think everything you said is true. Though I myself am Christian by birth I have come to appreciate Christianity and the teachings of Christian saints after I became acquainted with Sri Ramamkrishna's and Swami Vivekananda's ideas and teachings. I think the reason why ideas of Christianity are better understood by Hindus is that of the main difference between Hindu and Christian religion - as far as I could see it - the base of Hinduism being practice and realisation /and this is not so with common Christianity/. Is this only an exerpt of "Practice of the Presense of God" in that web site and not the whole book? Because I didn't see it denoted as only a part of the book. Regards, Milena

Hi Partha, "Imitation of Christ" is availabale at the same site: www.ccel.org (Christian Classics Ethereal Library). There are many valuable books and works of Christian saints online in this site. There is one more site with such books online: www.catholicfirst.com "Imitation of Christ" is available there also. Hello All,

Although I haven't read it yet, I have heard from others that " The

Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta " by Swami Prabhavananda is

another good book for appreciating Christianity through Vedanta.

There's a good description of the book on the Vedanta.com site:

http://www.vedanta.com/showbook.cfm?booknum=10000010
