Guest guest
Esoteric Hinduism at Kent Grammar school Last week the undersigned did sessions for about 500 sixth form students at Princethorpe College, Coventry and Weald of Kent Grammar School, Tonbridge. The Hindu input on the issue of global warming was quite unusual. Instead of repeating the rhetoric of using energy efficient bulbs or improving insulation, Hinduism offered a lateral suggestion. It said, 'Encourage extended family tradition because then we can drastically cut the number of homes we need to heat and maintain. Imagine the savings when three generations live under the same roof instead of three different roofs! Then there is the issue of shifting the blame to the developing countries. We must bear in mind that the only reason why these developing nations are working flat out is because the first world keeps consuming at an ever increasing pace. The only way to curtail the frenzied lifestyles of the people in the first world wanting more and more lies in the teachings of world religions. The frenzied lifestyle that the commercial machinery continues to promote can only be tamed by esoteric religious teachings that emphasise contentment over greed. Someone has said, 'there is enough in this world for everyone's needs but not for everyone's greed.' We need to learn this lesson very fast if we wish to avoid a global catastrophe. The discussions at Princethorpe college focused more on philosophy of religion and need to challenge exclusivism of every kind including secular exclusivism to bring about genuine community cohesion. All the sessions produced warm response from the students. jay lakhani Vivekananda Centre London
