The Divine Āditya Hridayam Stotram

Ä€ditya Hridayam, is a hymn associated with the Sun or Surya and was recited by the great sage Agastya to Rama on the battlefield before fighting with Ravana. This historic hymn starts at the beginning of the duel between Shri Rama with Ravana himself. Sage Agastya teaches Lord Rama, who is fatigued after the long battle with various fighters of Lanka, this procedure of worshiping Surya for strength to defeat the enemy. These verses belong to Yuddha Kanda (Book 6) Canto 107, in the Ramayana composed by Valmiki Maharishi.

 

Significance of Slokas

 

In Aditya hridayam there are thirty Slokas in total. The significance of the verses is as follows:

 

1,2 : Approach of Sage Agastya to Shri Rama.

 

3, 4, 5 : Greatness of the Aditya Hridayam and advantages of reciting it.

 

6 – 15 : Surya as a means of self evident consciousness, conveying that the One

pervading outside and inside is the same.

 

16 – 20 : Mantra Japa.

 

21 – 24 : Mantra Slokas extolling Sun God.

 

25 – 30 : The fruits of this prayer, the method of recital and the procedure followed by Shri Rama, invoking God to bless him with the requisite strength for the victory in the battle field.

 

 

1. Tato yuddha pari srantam Samare Cintaya Sthitami Ravanam Cagrato drustva yuddhaya Samupasthitam ||

Seeing Sri Rama Standing absorbed in thought at the battle field, exhausted by the fight and facing Ravana who was duly prepared for the war.

 

2. Daivataisca Samagamya drastu = mabhyagatoranam | Upagamyabra Vidrama magastyo bhagavanrsih ||

The all knowing cosmic Sage Agastya who had come with Gods to witness the battle, approaching Sri Rama Singly spoke to him thus.

 

3. Rama Rama Mahabaho srunu guhyam Sanatanam | Yena Sarva Nareehnvatsa Samare Vijayisyasi ||

‘O’ Rama, ‘O’ Mighty elegant armed Rama, listen to the eternal secret by which, ‘O’ my child, you shall conquer all your enemier on the battle field.

 

4. Aditya Hrudayam punyam Sarva satru Vinasanam | Jayavaham Japet Nityam Akshyayyam paramam sivam ||

It is Aditya hrudayam which is holy, destroyer of all enemies, bestower of victory, eternal and supremely blessed, and must be recited always.

 

5. Sarva mangala Mangalyam Sarva papa pranasanam | Cintasoka prasamanam Ayurvardhanamuttamam ||

It is the blessing of all blessings, destroyer of all sins, allayer of anxiety and anguish and bestower of longevity.

 

6. Rasmimantam Samudyantam Devasura Namaskrutam | Pujayasva Vivasvantam bhaskaram bhuvariesvaram ||

7. Sarva Devatmako hyesa Tejasvee rasmibhavanah | Esa Devasura ganam lokan pati gabhastibhih ||

 

Indeed he is the embodiment of all Gods. He is Self luminous, and is the sustainer of all the worlds as well as the host of Gods and demons by his Rays (which nourish and energise).

8. Esa brahmaca Visnusca Sivah Skandah prajpatih | Mahendro dhanadah kalo Yamah Somo hyapam patih ||

 

In deed he is Brahma (the creator), Visnu = (the Sustainer), Siva = (the destroyer) Skanda – (the son of Lord Siva, Prajapati = the lord of creation, the mighty Indra = (the king of Gods) Kubera = (the god of wealth), Kala = the lord of time, Yama = the Lord of death, soma = the moon, God that nourishes and varuna = the lord of waters.

 

9. Pitaro Vasavah Sadhya hyasvino maruto manuh | Vayur Vahnih praja pranah rutu Karta prabhakarah ||

 

In deed he is pitrs, the eight Vasus, the Sadhyas, the twin Aswins (physicians of Gods), the Maruts, the Manu, the wind God, the fire God, the Life breath of the universe, the maker of six seasons and the store house of light.

 

10. Adityah Savita Suryah pusa gabhastiman | Suvarna Sadruso bhanuh hemareto Divakarah ||

 

He is the Son of Aditi, the progenitor (of all) the Sun God (the inspirer of action) the Courser in the heavens, the nourisher of all, the possessor of rays (the golden) the brilliant, the seed of the universe and the maker of the day.

 

11. Haridasvah Sahastrarcih sapta – Saptiriciman | Timironmahah Sambhuhtvasta Marttanda Amsuman ||

He has seven green horses (yoked to his Chariot), is of myriad – rayed, full of rays, the destroyer of darkness, the source of happiness, mitigator of the sufferings and is the infuser of life in the cosmic egg, having rays.

 

12. Hiranyagarbhah sisira stapano bhaskaro ravih | Agnigarbho diteh putrah Sankhah Sisira nasanah ||

 

He is Hiranyagarbha (Store house of riches); Sirsirastapana, illuminator, Ravi, bearer of the fire, (of dissolution in his womb), Son of Aditi, blissful, and the destroyer of the cold (or evilmindedness)

 

13. Vyomanatha starmobhedi Rugyajuh Samaparagah | Ghanavrustirapam mitro vindhyavithi plavangamah||

 

He is the Lord of the firmament, the dispenser of darkness, the master of the three vedas Viz Rig, Yaju, Sama, the sender of the dawn, the pourer of showers, the friend of waters, crosses the Vindhya range, who sports in Brahmanadi (he who goes on his course swiftly)

 

14. Atapimandali Mrutyuh pingalahsarvatapanah | Kavirvisvo Mahateja raktahsarva bhavo dbhavah ||

He is a giver of heat, adorned with a cycle of rays, he is the death itself (of impediments) tawny (or yellow coloured one) and the destroyer of all. He is omniscient, all formed, extremely, brilliant, reddish (or the beloved of all) and the source of all evolutes.

 

15. Nakshatra graha taranamadhipo visvabhavanah | Tejasamapi tejasvi dvadasatmnnamo stute ||

He is the lord of the stars, planets and constellations and the origin of every thing in the universe, the resplendent among the splendid. Oh! God, appearing in twelve forms (in the shape of twelve months of the year) salutations to you.

 

16. Namah purvaya Giraye pascimayaye namah | Jyotir gananam pataye Dinadhi pataye Namah ||

Salutations to you, the presiding diety of the Eastern mountain (where the sun rises), and the western mountain (where the Sun sets). Salutations to the Lord of the Stellar bodies and to the Lord of the day.

 

17. Jayaya Jayabhadraya haryasvaya Namo namah | Namo Namah Sahasramaso Adityaya Namo namah ||

Salutations to you, the giver of victory, salutations to you, the joy born of victory, Salutations to (you) the God having green horses, Salutations to you, Oh! Thousand – rayed Lord and Son of Aditi.

 

18. Nama ugraya Viraya Sarangaya Namo Namah | Namah padma prabodhaya martandaya Namo Namah ||

Salutation to be thesubduer of the senses (terrible one the valiant one, the one that travels fast (i.e. leading to the realisation of mystic syllable; OM; Salutations to him whose emergence makes the lotus blossom (the awakener of the lotus in the heart) and to the fierce one.

 

19. Brahme sanacyutesaya Suryayaditya Varcase | Bhasvate Sarva bhakshaya roudraya vapuse namah ||

Salutation to the overlord of Brahma, Siva and Visnu. Salutations to the Sun-God the spiritual light indwelling the solar or the resplendent one, the devourer of all is of form that is fierce like that of Rudra.

 

20. Tamoghnaya himaghnaya satrughnayamitatmane | Kruta ghnaghnaya Devaya Jyotisam pataye namah ||

 

Salutations to the dispeller of darkness, the destroyer of cold (ie fear), the exterminator of foes; the one whose extent is immeasurable, the annihilator of the unforgetable, the Lord of the stellar bodies.

 

21. Tapta camee karabhaya haraye Visvakar mane | Namastamo bhinighnaya rucaye lokasakshine ||

Salutations to you, possessor of the lustre of refined gold, destoryer of ignorance, the architect of the universe. Salutations to the destroyer of darkness, Splendour incarnate; the witness of the world.

 

22. Nasayatyesa Vai bhutam tadeva Srujati prabhuh | Payatyesa tapatyesa Varsatyesa gabhastibhih ||

 

This Sun God, destroys all that has come into being, he alone creates them all and sustains. He alone radiates heat by his rays and sends rain.

 

23. Esa suptesu jagarti bhutesu parinistatah | Esa Evagni hotram ca phalam caivagni hotrinam ||

 

Seated in all created beings (as their inner controller) he remains awake when they are asleep. He is both Sacrificial fire as well as the fruit attained by the worshippers there of.

 

24. Vedasca kratavascaiva kratunam phalameva ca | Yani krutyani lokesu sarva Esa Ravih prabhuh ||

Sun is verify the vedas, the sacrifice and also the fruit of sacrifices. He is in deed the Lord of all actions in this universe.

 

25. Ena mapatsu krucchresu kantaresu bhayesu ca | Keerttayena purusah Kascinna vasidati Raghavah ||

 

Oh! Raghava, an individual, singing the glories of the Sun Lord in great difficulties, during affliction, while (lost) in the wilderness, and when beset with fear, will not come to grief (or loose heart)

 

26. Pujayasvaina mekagro Deva Devam Jagat patitam | Etat Trigunitam Japtva Yuddhesu Vijayisyasi ||

 

You worship this lord of the universe, the God of all Gods, with concentrated mind. Reciting this hymn thrice, you will emerge victorious in the battle.

 

27. Asminkshane mahabaho Ravanam tvam Vadhisyasi | Eva muktva tada gastyo Jagama ca yathagatam ||

 

He! Maha baho = Oh! Elegant shouldered Rama; Tvam = You; Ravanam = Ravana; Asmin Ravanam = Ravana; Asmin kshane = At this moment only; Vadhisyasi = Can be killed; Evam = In this way; uktva = Declared; Tatha Agasthyah = Then Sage Agastya; Yatha gatam Jagamaca = Left in the Same way of his arrival.

 

28. Etaschrutva mahateja Nasta Soko bhavattada | Dharayamasa Suupreeto Raghavah Prayatatmavan ||

 

Having heard this, Raghava, endowed with extraordinary energy, became free from grief, feeling greatly delighted, with a composed mind retained (this hymn) in his memory.

 

29. Adityam prekshaya japtva tu param harsa mavaptavan | Triracamya sucirbhutva dhanuradaya Viryavan ||

Gazing intently at Sun and reciting the hymn, he experienced the Supreme Joy purifying himself after sipping water thrice Valiantly holding the bow.

 

30. Ravanam prekshya hrustatma yuddhaya samupagatam | Sarvayatnena Mahata Vadhe tasya dhruto bhavet ||

 

Seeing Ravana (in front of him) he was delighted and came forth to fight with great efforts, stood there vowed to kill him (Ravana)

 

31. Atha Raviravadana Nirikshya Ramam Muditamanah paramam Prahrushya manah | Nisicara pati samkshayam viditva Suragana madhyagato Vacastvareti ||

 

Then knowing that the destruction of Ravana (the ruler of the night wonderers) at hand, the Sun God. Standing in the midst of a host of gods, looked at Rama with delighted mind and exclaimed “Be quickâ€.
