IS VISAKHAPATNAM - SHIRDI EXPRESS ON ITS FINAL RUN ?The Hindu22nd April`2010B. Madhu GopalECoR authorities' silence on its extension heightens apprehensionsThe train has been running to full capacity since its introduction in May`2009Extensions being given to Puri–Bangalore-Puri

train for which there is hardly any demand.VISAKHAPATNAM : The indifferent attitude of the East Coast Railway (ECoR) authorities towards the Waltair Division has once again come to the fore with no announcement on the extension of Shirdi Express forthcoming. The popular train, being run twice a week, is likely to be withdrawn, and the officials concerned do not seem to be taking any steps for its continuation. The long-cherished demand of the people of the city for a direct train to Shirdi materialised only in May lastwith the introduction of 0867 Visakhapatnam-Shirdi (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and 0868 Shirdi-Visakhapatnam (Tuesdays and Sundays) as a special train. The train is convenient to pilgrims visiting the abode

of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba, apart from passengers bound for the State Capital.HUGE PATRONAGEThe train leaves Visakhapatnam early in the morning and reaches Shirdi the next morning. In the return direction, it leaves Shirdi in the evening & reaches Visakhapatnam the following night at 10.45 p.m.LONG WAITING LISTThe train has been running to full capacity since its introduction. There is a long waiting list both for the Sleeper Class and AC coaches. Despite its immense popularity and overwhelming patronage, it hasn't been converted into a regular train. The average daily waiting list for Sleeper Class is 100 and for AC it ranges between 30 and 50. Contrary to the expectations of the people that the train would be made into a ‘daily', the proposal wasn't even introduced in the recent

Railway Budget.PARTISAN ATTITUDEInterestingly, the ECoR authorities are giving extensions up to Six months to the Puri–Bangalore-Puri train for which there is hardly any demand. It's a clear indication of the partisan attitude of the ECoR. authorities, say the people of the city. The last trip for 0867 is on April 28 and the current waiting list for Sleeper Class has crossed 100 and for 3 {+r} {+d} AC it has crossed 25. The WL is expected to swell further with nearly a week to go for the "Final Run"Passengers are apprehensive that there wouldn't be any further extension of this train.Last minute announcement of Extension would deprive passengers to avail themselves of advance reservation. ARE THE AUTHORITIES LISTENING?Source - http://www.thehindu.com/2010/04/22/stories/2010042255570300.htmSairam,rOhit beHaL
