Guest guest
SSS Dear All, On seeing the overwhelming replies from you people I am posing some more questions which has been haunting my mind for so long. Why Lord Shiva is worshipped mostly thru' Shiva Lingam and not thru' his idol? What is the significance of Shiva Lingam? Guest guest
C.Ganesh Kumar [sMTP:gkumar_c] Thursday, July 05, 2001 1:09 PM Re: Breaking of coconut - Shyam Dear friends The concept of Shiva worshipped as Lingam is to say that God is Shiva - Sakthi Rupam .One is The Kinetic Energy ( Sakthi ) and the other is Potential Energy ( Shiva ) .One cannot exist without the other .In the destruction of an atom enormous energy is released ..This energy was already within the atom in a dormant state .By breaking ,the potential has been converted into kinetic energy .The Shiva Lingam expresses the unity of The Shiva Energy and Sakthi Energy throughout the Universe .The other explanation is about the very nature of God .There had been religions saying that God has a form and others saying that God is formless .The concept of Shiva Lingam says that God can be a form or He can be formless .Shiva Lingam can be taken as a form ( URUVAM ) or it can be considered as a non -form ( ARUVAM ) .Hinduism accepts all the modes of worship .If one wants to worship God as a form he can choose a form as he likes -like Krishna ,Shiva or Sakthi .But if one says that God is formless then God is Brahman - the infinite without any form .Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa tells a beautiful simile .God is like an infinite ocean .In the colder regions the water gets frozen into huge icebergs and glaciers .Like that the infinite ocean of Satchitananda takes several forms because of the coldness of the bhakthi ( devotion ) in the heart of a devotee .When the Sun of knowledge( Gnana) arises , the form dissolves into the formless infinite - just as the snow dissolves into water when the Sun rises .Baba also quotes " The being who has no name and form is called by a thousand names " ( OOR NAAMAM OOR URUVAM ILLARKKU AYERAM THIRUNAAMAM PAADI NAAM THELLENAM KOTTAMO " ).So Shiva as Lingam signifies that God can be a form or He can be formless .
