What the upanishads say about our BABA

Shankaram Siva Shankaram!

Recently I came across an old copy of explanatory notes on Upanishads – interestingly, the term Upanishad means “come-sit-near-to-me”, emphasizing the tradition of

Guru-Sishya paaramparya and the method of ‘word-of-mouth’ instruction sets passed on from the Guru to Sishyas. Thereby ensuring “proper” understanding of what is being taught and avoiding room for any different interpretations of the ‘written-word’!

Another aspect was the Sishya earning a place to sit at the feet of his Guru and learn, through obedience, service and demonstrating his eagerness to learn.

The Upanishad also lists down four essential qualities of a Guru, and an epitome of those qualities is our BABA:

SHRATIYA: one who is well versed in the scriptures

BRAHMANISHTAM: one who has realized his spiritual goal and has established himself in the Brahman (brahmam)

AKAMAKITA: one who is not smitten by desire

NISHKALAMIKA: one who is free from guile, without a stain.

We are so very fortunate to have BABA as our Guru and we all know that, as the song goes, HE is … “ guru alla iRai “

And my redefined or refined goal is to earn that place at HIS feet and seek His blessings,

Shankaram Siva Shankaram!
