Guest guest
March 2004 - revised - Events 2nd mar - Muharrum - Muslim festival( a day of mourning) Over 1400 years ago, the beloved and purest progeny of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) befell and withstood the cruelest and most overwhelming calamities, afflictions, and tribulations. Today we are reminded of what the Holy Progeny went through to save humanity from degradation and humiliation. Muharrum, although being the first month of Islamic Calendar and embarking on a new year, is not a festival in the celebratory sense as it mourns the tragedy of Kerbala when Imam Ali Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammed, was martyred in the 61st year of Hijra (AH). It is observed in different ways in various parts of the world, but the theme of mourning is constant throughout especially amongst Shia Muslims. It is not a month to rejoice or celebrate any event but to share the common grief and sorrows on the advent of the month of Muharrum. It is a month of lament and mourning for Hussein, the hero of Islam, who laid down his life, along with those of his family, friends, and relatives on the burning sands of Kerbala in Iraq. It is a month of grief that vivifies the human memory about an event that occurred on the plains of Kerbala, in Iraq. Muslim conduct processions- and beat their chests with blood oozing from their chests to show their reverance to the Hussein, who was martryed.. 4th -Thur - Pradosham ( shiva, monthly) 6th - sat- Paurnami & Maasi Magam - at Ramrajya , Kelambakkam Yagams & Sathyanarayan Pooja & cultural programmes 6th - Mahamagam- (- once in 12 years, at the huge tank) at Kumbakonam temple A holy festival that will bring you to Kumbakonam once in 12 years - the temple city that gets its name from "Kumbha" - the divine pot.
