"Jyothi Jyothi Jyothi Param" The holy town of Palani fills to the brim with pilgrims for this annual festival in January. Although lasting ten days culminating during the full moon day, the most

important celebrations occur on Thai Poosam day itself, when devotees congregate in the Palani temples of Muruga.Thai Poosam celebrates the birth anniversary of Lord Subramaniam, one of the paramount Hindu deities and the son of Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Celebrations (lasting for ten days surrounding the full moon) centre in the temples, where serious devotees have been known to prove their worth by piercing their chests and backs with needles and hooks, while others engage in equally masochistic fire walking to prove their devotion A festival occurring in the Tamil month Thai (January-February), on the day of the star Poosam around Pournami (Full Moon) is celebrated as Thai Poosam. There are several legends about the festival Thai Poosam. Here are a few of them There was a demon named Tharakasuran who gave a lot of trouble to the rishis and saints. Lord Muruga was called by his parents Lord Shiva and Parvati and given the job of destroying the Asuran. Lord Muruga set off with the blessings of his parents to destroy the demon. He took with him twelve weapons, eleven of which were given by his father Lord Shiva and the 'Vel' given by his mother Parvati. Lord Muruga destroyed Tharakasuran on the Poosam Nakshatra day in the Tamil month of Thai and hence Thai Poosam is celebrated in all Murugan temples. According to another legend, as Shiva was imparting a mantra to Parvati, Lord Muruga eavesdropped on them. For that error, Parvati laid a curse on him, in line with the rule that even a son, if erring, must be punished. To be redeemed from her curse, Lord Muruga offered hard

penance at Thiruparankundram. Pleased with his penance, Shiva and Parvati appeared before him and lifted the curse. The day on which the curse was removed is Thai Poosam. It is thus a special day for worship of Lord Muruga or Subrahmanya and is celebrated in a very grand manner at all Murugan temples, especially at the Six Battle Camps or 'Aaru Padai Veedu' of Murugan Thai Poosam is a very important festival , associated with pilgrimage to Palani. Devotees from Tamil Nadu reach Palani by foot (Pada Yathra) and worship. Begining with flag-hosting at Perianayagiamman Temple, this festival runs on for 10 days. Kavadi of various types (with holy water, sugar, flowers, tender co-conuts, etc., ) are offered to Murugan at

Palani. On the 6th day, there is procession of Lord Muruga with Valli and Deivanai in the Silver Car. During this, Kavadi dance and rural musical-dance are performed. On the 7 th day there is "Thai Thaer" (wooden Car) and thousands of devotees participate in this. On the 7th day "Chinna Kumarar" goes round in His Golden Car. Vallal Ramalinga Adigal attained Samadhi at Vadalur on Thai Poosam day on Jan 30th. He merged with Lord Muruga as a Jyothi . VALLALAR rendered the Thiruvarutba- He sang " Arul Perum Jyothi, Arul Perum Jyothi, Thani Perum Karunai, Arul Perum Jyothi " Vetrivel Muruganukku Arohara! Vetrivel Muruganukku Arohara!!
