Shankaram Siva Shankaram

 

Fire warms you when you are at a distance. As you go nearer, it starts becoming hotter. If you throw a log into the fire, the log crackles, burns steadily into ashes and becomes part of the burning embers.Similarly, it is easier to pray to God from a distance. As you draw closer to Him, He will test you to check your faith in Him. The tests grow more intense as you move nearer and nearer, that it seems almost torture. Despite all the trials and tribulations that He hands to you as tests, you must hold on, contemplating on nothing but Him. Then He will reward your faith and you will melt into oneness with Him.

 

Face whatever life has to offer you, with absolute patience and do not miss out on God. At some point of time, you will start seeking God for the sake of God rather than pray to Him as a means to fulfill your materialistic desires. Then you will realize that He is ultimate and nothing else counts. Once you reach this state, whatever you think, materializes.

 

A man went on a pilgrimage to Kasi. He rang up to his four wives and asked them what they wanted. The first wife said, ‘Buy me a silk sari.’ The second wife said, ‘Get me Kasi Halwa (a sweet).’ The third wife said, ‘Bring me the temple prasadam’. The fourth wife said, ‘You return safe. That is the one gift that will thrill me.’

 

The man returned, presented a silk sari to his first wife, Kasi halwa to the second, gave the temple prasadam to the third. And he moved in with the wife who had wished for his safe return. The other three wives asked him, ‘Why are you distancing us?’ to

which he replied, ‘Each one of you got whatever you wanted’. So also, God gives you what you ask. If you are happy in your devotion, He will grant you devotion and happiness.

 

So, be with the world, do your duties to your family. But hold on to God as your Only Relation, in any relationship you want. And He can play any role to perfection, because God is nobody, He is nothing, and yet He is everything and everyone. If you can hold on to Him totally, then He will serve you through all your births in any relationship you seek from Him. That will become your route to salvation, because you now have the best Friend in deed too! Love your worldly family, but do not get attached. Attachment will weave a web of illusion around you and cast you deep into the net of more attachments.

 

You must not forsake your relations; you must fulfill your responsibilities to them, without getting attached. If you have a sister, recollect Arunagirinathar’s sister who paved way for his enlightenment. So, think of your sister as a form of God and serve her as you would serve God. When you see your child, recollect how Lord Siva manifested Himself as Pattinathar’s son and freed the merchant from his greed for wealth. And so, serve your child as you would serve the Lord. It was ThiruNeelakandar’s wife who led him to enlightenment. It was Karaikal Ammaiyar’s husband who led her to enlightenment. So think of your spouse as a form of God, and serve as you will serve God. When you learn to think of each one of

your relations, be it parents or spouse or children or anyone, as a form of God and serve them as you will serve God, then you have gone beyond attachment and are in the threshold of Love.

 

What you need to understand is that, all the worldly relationships that you have acquired through the consequences of all your past and present karmas, are strategies that God has devised to lead you unto Himself. It is upto you to use them as a spiritual ladder to step up to God, or as a net of illusions to get entangled further.
