How did muruga attain this state? By renouncing the world, knowing it to be transient. And that is why there is nothing that he does not have!Vallalar, the all-knowing mystic saint sought god’s grace for human beings to understand their real form-that of light. For attaining this, you need the grace of muruga. He is present as your kundalini shakthi -- the transcendental energy, and so, even the celestials can revel in the bliss of their divine state through the grace of muruga only. That is why arunagirinatha sings, ‘please grant me the grace of your lotus feet that will cool my being and help me attain the divine light’. He requests, ‘i must not think of you, because only if i forget, do i need to think’, thus beseeching the lord to ensure that his devotee will be always immersed in thoughts of him.

The purpose of this birth is to discard the transient human garb and adorn oneself with the permanence of divinity. Or use this human form as a ladder to step up to divinity. This flesh and blood human form is due to be consumed by the flames of cremation fire. What will remain is the light within. That is what we must seek during the course of life -- to be one with the divine light.

The easiest way to quench forest fires is to light a fire in a central place that the fires are bound to leap to. So, by the time the forest fires reach that place, the foliage would have already been burnt to ashes and there would be no opportunity for the forest fire to spread. One fire quenches another. So too, the fire of yagnas protects you from the cremation fire. Hence the fire offering to god in the form of yagnas. If you hold on to this fire with absolute conviction, it will help you merge into the cosmic supreme.Observe, and you will notice, that during yagnas, ghee is offered to the fire without any discontinuity. This is an inherent request to god, to grant a perennial flow of good in everyone’s life. That will happen only when you are in constant thoughts of the lord. The saint sings, ‘when will you grant me the bliss of your lotus feet being eternally enshrined in my heart?’ and addresses muruga

as ‘varadavrata’ -- one who observes granting boons as his eternal vow routine. If we hold on to muruga with firm faith, we will attain the lotus feet of the ultimate divine -- for, siva and muruga are one. What is the evidence for this? In kaschiyappa sivachariar’s skanda purana, there is a proclamation, ‘siva and muruga are no different; it is one of the eternal pastimes of the lord that he manifests himself in the youthful form of muruga’. Just an identification -- like the several nicknames a person has in his youth, that blend into his actual name as he grows older. What must we seek of this youthful version of the lord? That the heart must turn crimson pink (reminding us of his lotus feet). And this can happen only when it is mellowed with love for god. The physical form contains six chakras. When the kundalini shakthi is awakened, it traverses through the first three chakras and when it reaches

the fourth chakra, it is in consonance with muruga, the ruler of the heart. As the master, he helps you pass the test of life -- but then, remember he is an exacting master, and he will evaluate you through various challenging tests. If you hold on to him despite all the ‘trials and tribulations’ life holds for you, he elevates you and only then can you reach ambal and through her, siva. Take the case of vallalar. He got into the good books of kandakottam muruga. Then he gained the grace of vadivudaiyamman (a representation of shakthi). There are instances of amman serving food to vallalar when he was hungry. Through her, he pleaded and obtained the grace of chidambaram nataraja - - not an easy task in any way. And then he was immersed in the eternal bliss of that eternity. This experience cannot be described in words; it can only be felt. And for this, your heart must be mellowed by love, and that can happen only if the

ruler, muruga, decides.Take a worldly example. Your son may bring home a friend some evening. You would serve the same delicacies to both of them. If that child frequents your home, you will start getting used to his presence in the kitchen! Your husband may ask you who the child is, and you will introduce him as your son’s friend. And now that child, who was once a stranger, is a friend of the entire family. So too, someone who lives up to muruga’s excellence of standards, becomes muruga’s friend, is gradually introduced to shakthi, who then leads that person to siva. And it feels great having god for your friend and being god’s friend, doesn’t it?Siva shankar baba knows this cosmic secret. He has won the favours of muruga, who has led him to shakthi and through her, siva. And now god is my friend and he looks upon me as his friend. What else is there to seek of life?Whatever i am today, is thanks to

muruga’s compassionate grace and i am very grateful to him. If you understand this, you will know why it is important to sing muruga’s praises and seek his grace to mellow your heart into a crimson pink lotus that can serve as his throne. In the year 1986 at palani hills, lord skanda appeared in his princely form before siva shankar (baba) and instructed him to carry out the mission of uplifting humanity to the ultimate truth - god. Lord skanda gave siva shankar three instructions:1. No need to don the robes of a sanyasi.2. Do not seek to accept anything in return for the services you render to people.3. Continue to lead a family life and live with the family until your duties are done. Lord skanda commanded baba to serve humanity and undertook to guide him internally throughout his mission.
