Guest guest
Holiday Survival Guide By Misty L. Trepke Struggling to make it through the Holiday season? Exhausted from shopping? Bloated from over-eating? Do the holidays make you sentimental and weepy? On top of it all, are you suffering through a cold? If so, consider these homeopathic winter holiday survival remedies. There are many, many ways to choose and/or prescribe homeopathic remedies, but for the sake of simplicity and self-empowerment the following is a list of homeopathic remedies and their keynote symptoms. What does that mean? There are many, many remedies that cover exhaustion, bloating, weeping, etc., but over time it was noticed that certain remedies have an exceptional influence in a given territory. For instance, almost all people suffering from bruises are greatly improved by arnica. These well known and respected correlations of ailments and remedies have evolved into a special type of prescribing called keynoting. A deeper understanding and appreciation of homeopathy and homeopathic prescribing is greatly useful and should be strived for, but for the beginner this will serve as a manageable starting point that will allow you personal verification of the efficacy of homeopathic remedies. Arnica: Have you slipped and fallen on an icy path? Did you get a bruise? Have you strained your arms and/or back lifting and wrapping too many holiday gifts? This would be the perfect time to try arnica. Arnica is great for injuries like contusions, concussions, sprains, strains, all sorts of muscle injuries and the resulting bruises. Arsenicum Alb: Are you suffering from a flu? Does it include diarrhea? Do you find yourself restless at night? Are you anxious, perhaps about getting the house perfect for company? Are you worried about and driven to make the holiday festivities " just right " ? Arsenicum Alb is great for anxious, proper, worried and/or restless people, that do worse at night, especially from midnight to 2:00 am that also tend to have digestive upsets that burn and/or diarrhea. Cocculus: Dread the thought of traveling to visit family, friends, etc., because of motion-sickness? Whether it be plane, train, car or ship, give cocculus a whirl. Gelsemium: Exhausted? Does your whole body ache? Do your arms or legs feel way too heavy? Gelsemium is the quintessential flu remedy, along with arsenicum alb it is the perfect alternative to flu shots, but please only take them when the symptoms are present! Ignatia: Do the holidays make you lament for times past or people since gone? Is your heart weighted down by unendurable grief? Ignatia is wonderful for restoring equilibrium after such deep experiences of heart breaking sorrow. Ipecacuanha: Has your flu become a stomach flu? Are you nauseous and/or vomiting? Does the smell of food offend you? Welcome to ipecacuanha, unfortunately we have all been here at one time or another. Hurry, try ipecacuanha and you just might be up for that holiday meal or at least the left overs. Lycopodium: Stage fright. Are you concerned about being able to pull off a successful holiday bash? Unlike an arsenicum alb who is more concerned about everything being proper and perfect, you just want it to succeed. Do you have what it takes? Self doubt and low self confidence are the hallmarks of lycopodium. Take heart, lycopodiums normally always pull through, they are just nervous to begin with, so take a dose to strengthen your sense of self confidence and enjoy your success. Nux Vomica: The ultimate remedy for surviving the holiday season. Nux Vomica is for excess; excessive: shopping, working, hurrying, eating, partying, drinking, you name it. This is the remedy of choice for the morning after the party. Additional tip: if you are sensitive to traveling to other time zones bring this remedy along. (excessive traveling!) Phosphorous: Have you lost your voice from singing too many carols or other forms of over use? (Yes, this does sound like Nux Vomica, but trust me, this remedy is known as the clergy man's throat remedy for a reason. And if it does not work you can always try Nux Vomica afterwards.) Phosphorous is also wonderful for respiratory ailments. Many times the chest will feel as if it has a weight on it or that it is being constricted like from a boa constrictor; definitely a remedy to consider during pneumonia. Pulsatilla: Do the holidays bring out your sentimental, weepy nature? Your tears do not come from the overwhelming grief that an Ignatia is feeling, but that is not to say you can't work yourself up to that point. Pulsatillas have an overly emotional identification with the world around them; for instance, do movies or music make you cry easily? If so, you may also find that your moods are highly changeable and that you are easily influenced by others. You might also notice that you seek consolation and often ask if your loved ones love you. If so, you might want to consider Pulsatilla. Rhus Tox: Remember Arnica and that slip on the ice? If you sprained your wrist during the fall keep Rhus Tox in mind. There, that should help.
