Guest guest
- Seniors United for Victory SUV Network Thursday, February 05, 2004 11:01 PM Rescuing Medicare (1.0) Welcome to a new virtual community of folks dedicated to finding ways to preserve Medicare and Social Security for all Americans. SUV (Seniors United for Victory) is organizing because last November, the staff of the strongest voice for America's seniors gave us the unkindest Christmas present of all: AARP's CEO sold out its soul, its integrity, and its future ability to operate in the best interest of America's seniors. Let's face it: at the dawn of the 21st century, the American values we grew up with are being buried under a constant avalanche of corporate greed, power-brokering and dishonesty. For decades, corporations (none of whom are citizens nor can vote) have been stealthily overthrowing OUR government. That which once we could trust to protect ordinary citizens from the abuses of corporate wealth and power is being systematically dismantled. Last autumn, shielded by Republican control of both Congress and the White House, the greatest money-grab scheme of all time was launched by the Drug / HMO / Insurance industries. Backed by Gingrich moles planted inside America's largest senior organization, AARP's CEO Bill Novelli stalked the Halls of Congress pimping the organization he is hired to protect, offering AARP's endorsement to any Capitol Hill Republican who wished to use her. Ravaged by Congressmen whose pockets were stuffed with Drug / HMO / Insurance company contributions, the hope for a meaningful Prescription Drug Bill was mutilated behind closed Committee doors, transformed into a gargantuan welfare program for multi-national corporations, with hundreds of billions of tax dollars siphoned away from the support of America's seniors. You've got to hand it to these charlatans. They've mastered their long practiced tricks of misdirection and sleight of hand. Novelli was able to peddle AARP's endorsement WITHOUT ever asking AARP members' permission. This former advertising executive is spending millions of AARP dollars then and now -- in TV ads and in print -- trying to con AARP members into believing that he didn't sell them out! But those whom they conned the most were themselves. They actually believe America's seniors are too stupid to catch on to how badly we're being ripped off -- and that even if we figure it out, we're too dumb to do anything about it. Guess again, Newt Novelli!! The time has come to empower ourselves. We, the current and soon-to-be seniors of America, represent an enormous wealth of skills and abilities that must be mobilized to protect today's seniors and generations to come. The Drug Industry alone hires six (6) lobbyists for every Congressperson to write the legislation they need to rip us off. Yet we possess an even greater asset: abundant retirement hours with which to apply our hard earned skills and abilities to rebuild an America that our parents and grandparents could be proud of. They fought and worked their lives to give us the best they could. Are we to be satisfied with passing to our children a hollow shell laced with debt? And are we satisfied to allow Corporate America to literally suck the life out of us? Surely not. As my mother used to say, " It's time to put on our thinking caps! " ---Gene Messick, SUV Coordinator ================================================= Encourage all you know to DROP their AARP membership in protest of AARP's catastrophic endorsement of the pork-filed $400 billion Medicare Bill which charges senior's health care costs (plus interest) forward to our children and grandchildren. Send your cancellation and comments to AARP President-elect Marie Smith, 601 E Street NW, Washington DC 20006. Tell her to get you back, AARP must reverse course, and publicly work to repeal this outrageous boondoggle for the Drug / HMO / Insurance industries by writing and passing an honest Prescription Drug Bill that works for all Americans.
