Dangerous Bite Appliance A reader asked us about what her DDS called an

alternative to a bite guard. It covers the upper 2 central incisors. She has an

irregular bite relationship - her teeth don't come together harmoniously, and

this sets off the grinding and clenching cycles The 'appliance' keeps her back

teeth apart, and this gives patients comfort - temporarily.

What the DDS doesn't recognize is that it allows the back teeth to extrude

erratically, and the bite becomes even worse when the little appliance isn't in

place.

This gadget is being promoted in dental magazines prominently - every DDS sees

it, and few DDSs seem to know much about bite relationships and Dental Stress.

We might suggest to you that any DDS using this type of bite guard really is

ill-informed. It kind of reminds us of the dental mentality that plugs teeth

with mercury.
