Cancer prevention has taken a big step forward today. The American Institute for Cancer Research presented the findings of the most comprehensive report on cancer prevention policy ever undertaken at a Congressional briefing on Capitol Hill. Some amazing numbers are contained in the report: We can prevent over 45% of colon cancer cases and 38% of breast cancer cases in the U.S. by making changes in our diet, physical activity and weight control. Think about it: 49,000 fewer cases of colon cancer and 70,000 fewer cases of breast cancer a year. And these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. Overall, a third of the most common cancers can be prevented. The new WCRF/AICR Report is called Policy and Action for Cancer Prevention - Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective. The report tells us what kinds and how many cancer cases can be prevented, and it details 48 specific policy recommendations that would significantly reduce the burden of cancer now affecting more than 1.4 million Americans every year. For more details on the report, click on the book to the right, and watch for coverage on tonight & rsquo;s CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and in your local paper. We & rsquo;ll keep you posted as we continue our efforts to raise awareness about the positive benefits of cancer prevention and its implications for global health.
