Guest guest
If anyone has ever gone through the excruciating pain of a kidney stone, you know why a quick and effective home remedy is important. I was in severe pain for a week. And had a long wait still till I could get in to see a specialist. I had an impulse to do a search on " dissolving kidney stones " . There were a variety of commercial products that came up, and " how to " booklets for sale. But found several places where easy at home remedies were discussed. A general consensus was that the most healthful and fairly effective remedy was drinking 2 ounces of fresh squeezed lemon juice mixed with 2 ounces of olive oil, followed by (at first sign of next bout of discomfort) at least a quart of water. This worked amazingly well for me. I had been in severe pain all week, with blood in my urine, intense urgency that required me to practically live in the bathroom, and nausea from the pain. I took the first dose (some folks only use one dose) in midafternoon and by dinner time I was hungry and pain had greatly diminished. Was still having some of the intense waves of pain, though the frequency had diminished somewhat. Decided to try a second dose before bedtime. I was up twice more in the next two hours, and then slept through till morning (rather than being up and down all night long, and sitting long periods in the bathroom). I could still feel something " off " when I urinated, but not the intense waves of pain. By midafternnoon on the second day, about 24 hours after taking the first dose, i started passing stones. Twenty some of them, various sizes and shapes, all jaggedly sharp little things. The original blockage may have had fewer but larger pieces that may have broken down from the treatment - others who had had imaging done first and knew the original size and placement of their stones said this had happened for them with this treatment. It doesn't, from the anecdotal reports, work for everybody, and perhaps works for certain types of kidney stones more than others. But it worked for me, and seems worth a try for anyone in such intense pain. Other remedies folks mentioned included mixing 3 cups of water with a cup of lemon juice; drinking three quarts of this mixture over the course of a day, a quart guzzled down at a time. Others used apple cider vinegar, though didn't specify amounts. Some used a rather nonhealthful approach (to my mind) - guzzling down six cokes as quickly as one can (said diet coke would be okay, for instance for a diabetic - but personally though I never touch refined sugar I'd prefer the sugar to the AS sweetners). Followed by 6-8 ounches of cooked and blended asparagus. I guess the acid in the coke is stronger than lemon acid. I don't understand the chemistry or whatever for the asparagus. Folks do say the coke remedy is the most consistently effective home remedy for dissolving a kidney stone. Still won't work for everybody, but even more folks respond to it than to the lemon juice/olive oil remedy I used. Had the lemon juice mix not worked, I'd have tried the coke regime. But am thankful I didn't need to. Hope the info is helpful to others. Sara
