Guest guest
PLASTIC COATED FRUITS COMING TO LOCAL MARKETS Scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's research service have applied for a patent for a new edible coating made of food grade polyvinyl acetate. PVA is cheaper to use and more effective than shellac at preventing fruit decay after harvesting without discoloring the fruit. Polyvinyl acetate is a synthetic polymer that is used as an ingredient in chewing gum. In addition to the polyvinyl acetate, the coating for fresh produce can include plasticizers, surfactants that aid coverage, gloss enhancing additives, and other ingredients for specific uses, such as to coat candy and baked goods.
