John, I had low blood sugar problems and depression to boot (still working on the depression thing, <g>..currently trying SJW and GABA) for most of my life. In senior high I started gaining a little weight, but not so much that anyone would call me fat by any means... I ate the same as every other kid in high school - lots of sugar, white flour, and more sugar! Anyway, after 2 pregnancies (and Gestational Diabetes with both of 'em) I was not losing post-baby weight fast enough. After 4 months postpartum, I still couldn't fit my husband's pants on, and he is obese (size 36w on a good day, 38w on most days). Anyway, my mom gave me a couple of diet books that she had outgrown, and one of them was called _Protein Power_. It talked about the link between hypoglycemia, diabetes, and HEART PROBLEMS. You have to understand that at the time that my mom gave me those books, my situation had gotten so bad that I was baking cookies at least 4 times a week, and had around 2-3 Cokes a day. It's not about a will to be sick or fat, it's about self-medicating for blood sugar problems and depression. Smart? No! But it was the only way I knew to get that " better feeling " ! I was bowled over by the book, and went on the diet right away. It seems like I lost the weight overnight, but it took a good 6 months to get down from 150 to 122. Another six months to stabilize at 118. Now I'm down to a normal weight of 110-112 pounds (waist of 26 inches -- 'member how I couldn't fit my husband's size 36w pants on earlier??!! that's 10 inches!!), and am so excited by my " new " body that I've increased weight training and exercise in an effort to lose 1 or 2 more % of bodyfat (not scale pounds, but bodyfat). yikes, I hope this doesn't sound like an " I'm so great " post. It's not about that at all. I get so darn frustrated when I hear people rip on other people for what they eat. 'Cause I've been there, done that, and I understand *why* some will reach for a Coke. Having low blood sugars is no picnic in the park -- it is physically painful and the average person will do anything to avoid that pain. BTW before anyone says, " Oh that low carb diet is so unhealthy; all you eat is bacon " you should know that my diet consists of healthy antioxidant-filled fruits such as blueberries and strawberries mixed in cottage cheese, and mozzarella cheese sticks, and grilled chicken breasts, LOTS and LOTS of salad with olive oil & vinegar dressings, and lots of vegetables such as broccoli, cucumbers, zucchini, cauliflower, spinach, some squash, and non-starchy root vegetables. -- Mindy ----------------------- " ...that they may be one...
