Guest guest
You were talking about deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) which is sometimes useful in healing peptic ulcers. The dose is 750-1500 mg three times a day on an empty stomach. The tablets need to be chewed as saliva activates the licorice. If treating a peptic ulcer, it can be used for 10-16 weeks or until the ulcer is healed. Now for the warnings. Long term use of licorice can drain the body of potassium and cause retention of sodium. Do not use if you have diabetes, hypertension, liver disorders, severe kidney insufficiency, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, hypoglycemia or hypokalemia. Do not use if pregnant or nursing. If misused, it can cause edema, electrolyte imbalance, headache and vertigo. DGL is safer to use, but still should not be used for prolonged periods. The best thing to do when someone suggests something is to check it out further yourself. I use the Latin names to search the internet and come up with some good information. I also suggest you don't settle for one source but check several. If you are high blood pressure, be sure to get the de-glyccerized (or something like that!) kind, and if it is very high, you should avoid licorice altogether or at least check your pressure daily. There are some herbs that will seem to give you energy but are actually overworking your adrenals as they do so. Try the licorice and let me know how you feel!
