<< Hi Michelle,

Wow! I guess what you have been through is enough to make anyone depressed.

There is some evidence to suggest that there is a link between post-partum

depression and other kinds of depression and depleted levels of DHA and EPA.

DHA and EPA are essential fatty acids and these can often be lacking in our

diet. Strangely enough, I was talking about this with one of my sisters. She

has four children and with her middle two she took some kind of oil (she

can't remember which one it was - we are going back awhile here) because she

heard it would make the birth easier. she kept taking it after birth. She

noticed that with the middle two that she was back on her feet in no time

and she didn't get depressed. Tired yes, but depressed no. We figured the

oil she took must of had some of the essential fatty acids in them.

I think you are doing the right thing with the B vitamins - a lack of B

vitamins has also been proven to be linked with depression.

But the most important thing is your diet. I know when I wasn't 'at my best'

I was eating a tonne of crap - highly refined sugary foods that just were no

good for me or my mood. I was became the crankiest person around after the

birth of my late son. I became a little easier to live with once I modified

my diet - and my husband appreciates it too. Although it doesn't mean that

all of a sudden he's the most amazing person - he still has his fair share

of bloke tricks- just means I don't yell and scream the minute something

goes wrong. I can still get my point across w/out throwing an adult version

of a two year old tantrum! Yay! Part of getting well, for me, is also not

putting up with nonsense from our loved ones. When we get well, it just

means we can deal with these problems a little bit better than we used to -

the problems don't vanish because we changed our diet or took the right

supplement.

You can do a search on Essential Fatty Acids and Depression and you might

find some very useful information. >>

I did a graduate course review of the literature on the connection between

DHA/EPA and depression -- it had to be presented in the form of a proposed

study as a gimmick - but the review part is good -- if you'd like a copy let

me know
