Thirty Nigerian families sued Pfizer (news/quote) in federal court

yesterday, saying the company conducted an unethical clinical trial of an

antibiotic on their children in 1996. It is the first suit in the United

States seeking damages from an American pharmaceutical company for what the

plaintiffs say was medical experimentation on foreign citizens without their

consent.

university of violating academic freedom for fear of losing research funds

from drug companies when it revoked a job offer to an outspoken British

psychiatrist.

Some antidepressants in the same class as Prozac significantly increase the

chance of stomach bleeding, say experts Particularly at risk are the elderly

and those who already had a history of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

There has already been one piece of research which suggests the link between

bleeding and " selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors " , or SSRIs.

A prominent British psychiatrist has filed a $9.4-million lawsuit against

the University of Toronto and an affiliated teaching hospital alleging he

was denied academic freedom when his employment contract was revoked one

week after he delivered a lecture linking the drug Prozac to suicide.

The lawsuit, which will be the first in Canada to test the issue of academic

freedom, asks the court to establish a new tort, or civil law, recognizing a

professor's right to speak out without fear of being fired or reprimanded.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Yorkers are increasingly turning to sedation to

help them escape the nightmares created by the September 11 attacks on the

World Trade Center.

According to doctors and pharmacists in the city, New York's denizens --

many grieving for lost friends and family --are looking to medicine more

than ever before to help fall asleep.
