The latest issue of the IASTAM Newsletter, September 2000, has just

been mailed to everyone on the IASTAM mailing list (postal, not

email).

As usual, the Newsletter is full of news, reports, opinions, book

reviews, and an important notice about the upcoming IASTAM conference

in Halle (August 2002).

Most important of all, members of IASTAM have now selected their new

Council, and the incoming council members are introduce themselves in

the Newsletter with their contact details and a paragraph or two

about

themselves and their goals as IASTAM Council members.

The Council exists to serve you in promoting the goals of IASTAM.

Make your views known. Participate!

Best,

Dominik

Dear Dominik,

The newsletter is very useful to me. For instance, Waltrauds review of

Zimmermann's 'The Jungle and the Aroma of Meats' mentions Ayurveda's

logico-poetic approach to medicine while the contributions of Hsu and

Tiquia reminded me of the importance of the laboratory for the construction

of modern Asian medicines. In an article in Culture, Medicine and

Psychiatry 24 (2), june 2000, Hsu discusses these two 'styles of knowing'

which 'differ according to the ways in which experts establish their

authority'. In 'Les nouvelles marchandises' as Zimmermann (1995) calls the

factory-produced Ayurvedic pharmaceuticals about which I am writing my PhD,

both 'styles of knowing' are represented.

I was shocked when I read about the death of dr. K.M. Parikh with whom I

spoke extensively in the beginning of this year. Within Zandu he was known

as 'the doctor'. On the first day of my visit to Zandu in January 2000, dr.

K.M. Parikh organised a meeting where I could meet Zandu's managers. After

I had talked for 20 minutes about my PhD-research, K.M. Parikh spoke for a

long time about Ayurveda and Zandu in particular. This meeting made the

Zandu' people more accesible for me. For this opportunity I feel grateful

towards dr. K.M. Parikh.

I hope the Newsletter will further enhance communications among people

active in the field if Asian medicines.

Best wishes,

Maarten Bode

Dear Maarten,

Thanks for your feedback. Yes, Parikh's death has been a shock to us all.

If you felt It would be nice if you could write a little more about him,

for publication in the next Newsletter.

All the best,

Dominik

Dear Dominik,

Thank you for asking. When must my contribution reach Waltraud?

I was just re-reading the transcription of an interview with dr. K.M.

Parikh that I had on Feb 21 2000. The interview was interesting but quite

formal. Though I am sure Narendra Bhatt would be able to add more of a

'personal touch' to it all, I will be happy to write something about my

encounter with Parikh in the context of gathering data for my PhD-thesis.

best wishes,

Maarten
