Guest guest
Hi Susan and everyone You brought up an interesting point, and I'd like to see what everyone thinks. You mention that Bergamot is photosensitising, ie it encourages pigmentation of the skin if the person goes out into the sun (or has a sun-bed treatment) after use. Years ago, women often had little brown marks on their neck or wrists that were the result of applying perfume that contained Bergamot, but I haven't seen that much these days. It's the furocoumarin (a lactone) content that causes this, and it's found in several of the citrus peel oils, as well as angelica and possibly ginger. I personally do use Bergamot in skin applications, but always warn my client about its possible effects. The point I want to make is the question of FCF (furocoumarin-free) Bergamot. I do not like to use any essential oil that has been tampered with in a lab. Who knows what happens to the other chemical components if one of them is removed? Perhaps those remaining would have deletorious effects? So personally I will continue to use the whole essential oil and give the appropriate warning. By the way, I don't consider you a Mrs Know it all, and hope you don't leave the list. You have provided a good point for discussion, and I think sharing our knowledge and opinions are what it's all about.
