I don't know why it should be controversial, except in that some people

might

disagree on the note of some oils. But then, every batch is different. I've

had a

black pepper that's a base note, and a black pepper that's a middle note,

according

to my nose. Likewise, lemongrass and clary sage are often described as

being top

notes, but I think they're more middle. Perhaps we could say middle-to-top

or even

top-to-middle, to confuse the issue further.

<snip>

So I guess it's all about blending. The rule of thumb is to make a blend

containing a balance of all three notes - one of those rules you learn in

class,

then adapt as the mood takes you.

Hi all

I'm interested in this blending business as well as the note of the oils..

In the short course I did, each oil had a blending *factor* ... a number

between 1 and 10. We needed to know this number to get the correct number

of drops to put in a blend. The number of drops would be 10 minus the

blending factor. For example ... a blend using Eucalyptus, Cypress and

Lemongrass would work like this:

Oil Blending factor Drops

Eucalyptus 8 2

Cypress 4 6

Lemongrass 6 4

Total Drops 12

Then the amount of carrier oil would be double the amount of drops but in

mls. So the above example would have 12 drops in 24mls of carrier oil. We

would keep those proportions for a smaller or larger bottle that we were

using.

We covered about 20 oils in this course and so I've got blending factors for

each of those. But of course there are squillions of oils and I can't find

anywhere where you get the blending factor information, so I'm basically

using my instinct along with the note information. Do any of you use the

blending factor method? Do you have info re blending factors or have

comments about them?

Look forward to any responses.

Have a thrilling day.
