Guest guest
You can get Birch oil here. Not only do they have a great selection they can even get some that they don't list. and their oils are pure, single species, 1st distillation, guaranteed herbicide and pesticide free, and reasonably priced. They were submitted for testing by a MLM company (not YL) before they put their aromatherapy line in and found to be some of the best oils available. http://www.zhealthinfo.com/essential-oils.htm - > You have birch oil! Sweet Birch (Betula lenta) is one of the essential oils that a lot of AT people have reservations about due to the high content of Methyl salycilate.... The high Methyl sal is the result of the maceration of the bark prior to distillation... The same is true about Wintergreen (Gautheria procumbens), but in this case the leaves are macerated... In both cases, the Methyl sal content will typically run in the high 90's percentage....the differences in the oils are due to the trace chemicals...but they're almost interchangeable.... Methyl sal itself is inexpensive and has at times been classified as a marine and environmental pollutant......and there have been reports of both Wintergreen and Sweet birch oils being " constructed " out of Methyl sal.....maybe this is done to " preserve " the environment, rather than dumping the Methyl sal into it....<G>... That being said....I went to the site Lynne mentioned.... They state that their Betula lenta has among the lowest Methyl sal, due to its not containing Wintergreen.....? I would hope not....they being different plants entirely.... But being a distilled Sweet Birch....it's gonna have Methyl sal in it in high concentration.....unless it's been " adjusted " somehow... Don't get me wrong....I have nothing against Methyl sal.....I make up a kinda oil mixture for aches and such (shoveling a lot of snow here in Wisconsin lately)....it does help, ya just have to bear in mind that you can't be putting a lot on, over a long term period (I add some capsicum oleoresin to this also...and that's another reason....)
