The message below was posted by me to an 'Alexander Technique' discussion group. If any of you are familiar with Yoga, I would be very interested to hear your views on this. The topic seeks to highlight a 'Posture' used by Alexander Teachers (see fig). This posture can be adopted when lying down; It will help to strengthen the upper thighs and abdominal regions. (One major advantage when lying down is that a person is less likely to be wearing confining clothes, a major problem in itself). If you closely observe children with good body balance, when they are in motion, you will realize that their use of this portion of the anatomy is very different from that of adults. Unfortunately many children damage this portion of their anatomy through wearing shorts having elastic. In this era of globalization practically all children around the globe wear these kinds of shorts...... Selvaraj----------Dear Friends, Alexander Teachers,This is to request information regarding a commonly used 'Alexander Posture'. Please refer the following image:

http://www.alexanderteacher.co.uk/images/albumpics/alexander-technique-5.gifQuestions:1. Does this 'posture' have a name?2. When I asked my brother (he is more knowledgeable in Yoga than me), whether this is one of the Yoga postures, he told me yes. But when I checked 10 pages of Goggle images with the subject title 'Yoga images', I could not find it. Neither did I find them in the below mentioned website:

http://www.santosha.com/asanas/pavana.htmlAny comments?3. How is this posture used in Alexander Technique? Apart from when a teacher 'adjusts' a subject's posture, does the teacher advise the subject to adopt this 'posture' when he is lying down for instance?

4. Would the teacher advise a subject to always adopt this 'posture' when lying down and not stretch the legs out (please refer 'corpse pose' in the above mentioned yoga site)?5. My feeling is, this is a very important 'posture'. Roughly, on the same scale as Lotus posture (or simple cross-legged siting posture). Any comments?

THANKS in advanceWishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.Selvaraj
