Maximum names are in Tamil!

The leaves of this herb are used for treating vomiting, bronchitis,

pneumonia and asthma. It is also used to treat cold and cough and for

killing intestinal worms.

The leaves are used as food, the same way as leafy green vegetables,

especially in Rajastan. It is also used for sprouting paddy faster

and also to make them pest resistant (especially the red spot

disease).

The herb is an irritant to the gastro-intestinal mucous membrane. It

acts reflexly through the stomach in small doses; it also acts as an

expectorant, in larger doses, as an emetic. This drug has also been

used as a laxative and anthelmintic. It can be summarised as having

Cathartic, Anthelmintic, expectorant, emetic, anodyne and hypnotic

properties.

The therapeutic properties of Acalypha in Ayurveda and Siddha texts

are discussed in detail at:http://openmed.nic.in/2001/

It has some anti-fertility activity too:

cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=10617059 & dopt=Abstract

Homeopaths have used this herb in tincture form to obtain amazing results:

The herb has a marked action on the alimentary canal and respiratory

organs. It is indicated in incipient phthisis, with hard, racking

cough, bloody expectoration, arterial hemorrhage, but no febrile

disturbance. Very weak in the morning, gains strength during day.

Progressive emaciation. All pathological hemorrhages having notably a

MORNING worse.

Burning in intestines Spluttering diarrhea with forcible expulsion of

noisy flatus, bearing down pains and tenesmus Rumbling distention,

and griping pain in abdomen Rectal hemorrhage; worse in morning.

Burning in pharynx, oesophagus, and Stomach. Pulse soft and

compressible Blood bright red and not profuse in morning; dark and

clotted in afternoon Constant and severe pain in chest

Cough dry, hard, followed by hemoptysis; worse in morning and at

night Jaundice Itching and circumscribed furuncle-like swellings.

Its successful application in phthisis and tuberculous affection of

the upper lung is described at

http://www.homeoint.org/seror/patho1900/acalypha.htm

It has been found to act upon the respiratory organs, inducing Dry

cough, followed by spitting of blood, which is its only

characteristic, this having been repeatedly verified by its prompt

cure of haemoptysis. According to one herbalist, it is indicated when

there is expectoration of pure blood in the morning, and dark lumps

of clotted blood in the evening.

Interestingly, it has been used for animals too by a Tamilian woman

herbal healer:[http://3award.nifindia.org/arumugam]

Take dry ginger (Zingerber officinale) rhizomes, Coleus aromaticus

benth (50 g), Kuppaimeni leaves (Acalypha indica) (a handful of

leaves) and Clome gynandra leaves (one handful) and grind all of

these and mix with rice water and give it to the animal. This will

take care of weakness in the leg of animal.

Extract the juice of Thumbai leaves (Leucas aspera) and Kuppaimeni

leaves (Acalypha indica) and thrust it into the anus of the animal

through a papaya stem and immediately the animal will be healed of

constipation.

Swelling on the neck

Take the leaves of Kovai (Coccinia grandis(h) Schrader) and squeeze

it to extract the juice. Add this to castor oil and apply this on the

animal's neck for four days and it will get healed.

Rheumatism in animals

Take leaves of Surai (Zizyphus oenoplia) (one handful) and a few

rhizomes of dry ginger (Zingiber officinale), Thippili (Pipper

longum) and Garlic (Allium sativum) and grind it to a paste and mix

it in water and give it to the animal till it is relieved of pain.

Grind paddy (Oriza sativa) seeds (one handful) and manjal (Dodonea

viscose) into a paste and then apply on the swollen area.

Sprain in babies

Daub the gingely oil (Sesamum indicum) and tamarind (Tamarindus

indica) leaves on the baby. Put the baby immediately into the cradle

and twist the cradle a number of times. The baby is relieved of the

sprain. In South India, cradle is made from cloth and hung from a

hook put in ceiling. Tamarind is known to be an enemy of joint pains,

swellings etc, but here we see how it relieves sprain!
