Guest guest
I have been practicing yoga for last six months. My Guru has told me to breath in and out by filling the air in lungs ( I mean chest). The other day I met someone who is practicing yoga for long. This fellow says that Yoga is useful for health only when one practices abdominal breathing. I know this is not Yoga group. But still, people might guide me on this one. Guest guest
Abdominal breathing is the one, everyone is born with! Kapalbhatti works especially because of abdominal muscles pump the diaphragm, increasing the lung capacity. Lung capacity can be increased significantly by abdominal breathing rather than expanding chest, where limit is imposed by ribs! A large post was devoted to this question at: http://health.ayurveda/message/6242 breathing doubts can be resolved by doing experiment at home, similar to high school science text book experiments . Blow your exhale in a rubber tube, the end of which is inside a inverted cyliner fully filled with water. Cylinder rests in a broad pan filled partially with water. The exhaled air drives out water, whose volume tells how much is the lung capacity. Still simpler method is to go to a swimming pool. Breath in by particular method and take a dip, holding breath as long as you can. The time for which you could hold your nose inside water is approximately proportional to lung capacity utilised by that method of breathing! And ofcourse simplest technique is to breath in and hold KUmbhaka and count in the mind. The method which can allow lengthiest kumbhaka is the one which uses maximum input to lungs. When yogis had such doubts perhaps they used yoga itself to find the answers! But this statement has a flaw! It is only scientist who gets a doubt, wants a measurable input and output to prove his hypothesis, yogi believes what guru offers. ___________________ > I have been practicing yoga for last six months.
