I would like to elaborate on the point Dr. Phadke and Todd are making

here and describe the pathology from a TCM perspective since the terms

are interchangable in Ayurveda and TCM. A major pathway for deficiency

states in TCM is depletion of Yin and Yang Jing (shukra), the loss of

essence. The pathway for the pathology caused by this loss is that the

Kidneys do not function properly and the blood becomes dehydrated and

chi (energy) deficient, with the acid toxins not being sufficiently

eliminated, ( in TCM the kidneys are the parent of the Liver, meaning

the energy as it passes from the Kidneys goes to the Liver and if this

energy is weak and toxic the Liver becomes stagnant or weak and the

toxins get backed up even further), this is called as stagnant damp

heat of the Liver.

There are many consequences to this, having to do with distribution of

energy, transformation of chemicals and hormones (thousands of

chemicals, hormones, and enzymes are dependent on the Liver for their

proper transformation and elimination of the toxic part of these many

substances), Other important deficiency states related to this are

poor distribution of the energy (the Liver is responsible for the

release of glycogen the primary energy source for the body) and

Insulin distribution. When the essence is diminished and the Liver is

stagnant the blood is not properly cleansed and it becomes polluted

with many toxins including excess acids, creating hot toxic blood,

this drives the fluids from the blood making all of the problems

worse. It is easy to see that this is an important source for dozens

of pathological conditions, with some of them being many eye problems

(the eyes are directly related to the Liver in TCM and what ever

pertains in the Liver pertains in the eyes).

This is why in all traditional systems the proper preservation and

control of the essence/shukra/jing/ is an essential element in the

preservation of health because when it is lost it is not easy to get

it back and we start into decline, in TCM the most important part of

the Jing is the Yin Jing (kapha functions) since if there is

insufficient Yin Jing or it does not function properly, the body can

not support the Chi or the Yang Jing, meaning if Kapha (water)

functions are not adequate then the body can not support heat

functions without overheating. This pathological heat is not true heat

(Yang), the Chinese call this false fire, acid toxins). Yang Jing

functions are relatively easy to recover but Yin Jing functions are

very difficult to recover

There are two reasons for Yin deficiency, one is genetic, we are born

with insufficient Yin Jing functions (actually very common if our

mothers were suffering from stress disorder when she was carrying us),

the other is long term stress that we might suffer, from any cause,

but this will also include excess loss of semen and the other sexual

fluids, which is obviously more important in those who already are

suffering from stress disorders. In modern terminology one part of

this is related to adrenal fatigue, especially cortisol insufficiency.

Many people do not understand why traditional people put such

importance on the preservation and protection of the shukra, it was

because they realized that the basic ability of the body to manifest

and thrive is dependent on the health of the Shukra (essence), this is

the foundation of our being, if Shukra is weak we are weak, we will

have inadequate reserves for dealing with the ups and downs of life.

This is why traditional thinkers advised the careful preservation of

the Shukra if we would develop strong body and mental and spiritual

strength. Some dismiss the practice of celibacy by the great souls as

anti-sex, in fact it was the simple practical understanding of the

role of the Shukra in human development and success. Conserving the

Shukra in defeciency states is not anti-sex, it is theraputics, a

medicine that attempts to rebuild the lost reserves. For some an

impossible medicine to take no matter how weak they may be.
