All endocrine glands work together in symphony. The reductionist thinking of modern medicine has given birth to many pills which achive desired effect and give rise to many other unwanted effects. Especially the birth control pills contain synthetic hormones and their effects are very serious, especially when taken for a long time. They give rise to unbalance in the function of other glands such as thyroid, please visit the link: http://health.ayurvedaarticles/Dr.%20BhateFi\ les/ and read the file early diagnosis of pre-diabetic and PCOS. some material from the file is brought here. Birth control pills, SSRI class antidepressants cause Insulin resistance, also known as metabolic syndrome, and elevate blood sugar. The insulin resistance here means loss of sensitivity to insulin, thus causing loss of energy, fatigue, body pains. What is not mentioned in above file is included here: The number of people who suffer has increased today, since many medications directed towards nervous system inititate endocrinal unbalance. The immuno-suppresant drugs are the most notorious ones. Other drugs are: Inhalers and other respiratory medications Herbal remedies such as Ma huang and ephedra High blood pressure medication (ACE inhibitors and Beta blockers cause several side effects which are similar to anxiety symptoms, especially breathing difficulties). This is included since you have also been asking about disturbed sleep. Some medications disturb the balance of neurotransmitters and cause several symptoms, which modern medicine terms anxiety symptoms. Withdrawal from alcohol Withdrawal from benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Restoril) Caffeine and other stimulants Drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and amphetamines Over-the-counter medications such as decongestants Steroids such as cortisone and prednisone Weight loss products Thyroid medication So if you are unable to sleep well, you are prescribed some anti-anxiety medication and that brings in other chronic conditions, which even other branches of medicine will find it difficult to cure. Guest guest
Very interesting, Dr. Bhate. I am going to get my thyroid check and go off the BCP to see if it helps. Guest guest
For those that are insulin resistant or diabetic, how do they incorporate fruit correct for their dosha without causing an imbalance? Do they need to eat more protein?

There are at least 64 herbs which can be used. The simplest one was recommended earlier in archives, based on the practice by tribals. But none of the herbs are evidence based in terms of modern science trials. This holds for most of the formulations. Those with ayurvedic mindset follow the advise. Do they need to > eat more protein? It is assumed that the question pertains to the usual diet. Yes increasing protein helps, but the proportion of carbs/protein/fats need to be worked out for each individual. Fruits are complex carbs, so are easy to choose for an individual, but root cause of Insulin resistance is important. If gut flora is imbalanced, cravings make it difficult to achieve stable state. You can search several messages posted earlier on this topic. Many Vaidyas have written so much on diabetes, that this post can be treated as a drop in sea.
