Guest guest
Dear Sailee, Stress results from your deregulated mental functions. The long term effect is the oxidative damage due to Vata (Prana) depletion. Medhya refers to the mind and intellect and rasayana means to optimize nourishment to the specific tissue. The medhya group of herbs helps enhance the ability to regulate your mental function, learning, retaining and recalling information beside protecting from oxidative damage. 1. Convolvulus pluricaulis (Shankhpushpi) is a prominent memory improving drug, a psychostimulant and tranquilizer due to presence of alkaloids, flavanoids and coumarins that bring about its biological effects.viz; (i) Memory effects, better sleep and more concentration abilities.; Shankpushpi increases protein synthesis in the hippocampus region of the brain that can be related to enhancement of memory function. (ii) Antistress effects and (iii) Tranquilizing and antidepressant effects. 2. Bacopa monnieri (or Brahmi) is now widely used to improve brain function including memory, to a lesser extent to reduce anxiety, to treat epilepsy, and as an antioxidant. Modern research has shown the presence of several active chemicals like the alkaloids monnierin, brahmine, bacosides and phytosterols. These principles are scientifically verified for their (i) Cognitive effects with improvement in verbal learning, memory consolidation and speed of early information processing. (ii) Effects on learning and lasting effects on improvement in logical memory, and (iii) Anxiolytic effects due to presence of bacoside 3. Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) is memory enhancing, and anti-ageing herb. The active principles are steroidal lactones which are responsible for its Medhya effect. It is popular for Memory enhancement, Adaptogenic and antistress activity. (i) The extract of Ashwagandha promotes growth of dendrites and branching of nerve-like cells suggesting nerve cell-to-cell contact and communication. (ii) Antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory activity. Shankapushpi, Brahmi and Ashwagandha have wonderful rasayana effect on our nervous system. These herbs has been scientifically verified also. Bhrami, and Shankhpushpi improves micro circulation, pumping of blood and enhances memory and corrects mental dysfunction. These herbs are useful in mental debility, Epilesy, Hypertension, insomnia, depression, neuromuscular dysfunction and stress management. Guest guest
Using harmonious combination of herbs has been a more prevalent practice in ayurveda, since herbs work in a better fashion that way; also, likely toxicity of one herb gets balanced by other herb. Traditional vaidyas never think in terms of chemical contents in herbs, and use ayurvedic tests (pulse, trividh, ashtavidh pariksha etc) to work out relative proportions of herbs in a patient specific mixture. The mode of actions of herbs occured to Acharyas not based on chemical contents of the herbs, but by observing the herbal world through third eye. Author wrote this since the original question is most likely from an ayurveda student. Similar curiosity also arose in an academic environment and since we like to repeat what westerners do, a trial on mice was done, to understand amongst Brahmi, Shankhpushpi and Jatamansi, which was more potent anti-stress herb? It was found that combined effect of Jatamansi, Shankhpushpi & Brahmi showed the most potent calming effect in mice. While in individual drug extract, jatamansi exhibited more potent effect than other two drugs. Jatamansi, Shankhpushpi and last was Brahmi in calming effect, when individual extracts were used. " Evaluation of comparative and combined depressive effect of brahmi, shankhpushpi and jatamansi in mice " , Indurwade, N.H. and K.R. Biyani, 2000, Indian Journal of Medical Science 54, 8, 339—341 Read online at the link: http://www.indianjmedsci.org/article.asp?issn=0019-5359;year=2000;volume=54;issu\ e=8;spage=339;epage=341;aulast=Indurwade Please note that this study used extracts injected in mice. When it comes to humans, while modern ayurvedic doctors may prefer capsules/tablets made from extract, traditional vaidyas still use herbal powder mixtures. When using powders, Aswagandha, Licorice, little vacha (acorus calamus) also may be added depending on patient. The way the powder mixture to be taken also differs based on patient. The highest benifit is obtained by use of fresh herbal juices when compared to above approaches. To get such medicine, patient has to go to Vaidya's medical farm, where additional advantage of " Far from the maddening metro crowd " , more ozone in the air, sounds of green nature, birds act as more potent medicines.
