Guest guest
I've suffered from an electrolyte imbalance since I can remember. I get terrible muscle spasms unless I supplement with magnesium daily. Forgot to take my magnesium last night and woke up this morning with a charley horse in my calf muscle. Ouch! Any ideas on what more I can do? A way to get to the underlying problem? Or am I going to take magnesium all my life? - Anna
Guest guest
In the past if you went to your doctor with night spasms he would tell you to go and take salt - completely wrong. (My Dad was always told this). 'Cramp' is a build up of lactic acid because the mitochondria have to work anaerobically. (Very similar to what happens in cancer). This usually occurs because of two factors - 1 lack of oxygen to the cells 2 lack of potasium Lack of oxygen could be from how you sleep (your position, garments), or your breathing pattern and how oxygenated your tissues were during the day - Do you exercise, do anything that ensures you use the bottom two thirds of your lungs? Lack of potassium can also be due to too much sodium in the diet, or lack of magnesium (which works a pump getting sodium out of cells and potassium in). Max sodium level per day for an adult is 1-2 gms not 6 which the UK FSA recommends (avoid all sausages, bacon, dried meats, bread, breakfast cereals, fast food, processed foods, baked beans, crisps, salted peanuts etc) - sodium poisons cells, makes them acid and kicks out potassium. You need 5x the anmount of potassium in your diet (apples and bananas, parsley, pulses, green leaf veg, nuts, garlic, potatoes and most non-citrus fruits/veg). Magnesium helps it all happen but is useless if you have sodium overload - Dairy, alcohol, the pill, HRT, caffeine etc all surpress magnesium levels - you really shouldn't need to supplement magnesium. (again eat nuts, green leaf veg, pulses, mangoes etc)..You see you may be taking Magnesium but I'll bet your sodium/potassium is imbalanced in the first place I am the founder and editor if a monthly cancer mag Icon (Integrated Cancer and oncology news) also author of 'Everything you need to know to help you beat cancer'. I cover the sodium/potassium and magnesium/ calcium partnerships in detail in my new book 'The Tree of Life: Everything you need to eat to beat cancer' - out in June (UK +44 (0) 1280 815166) Chris Woollams
