Dear Stewart:

Thank you for your question about my personal antibiotic use. I appreciate the

opportunity to explain a few things to you, which I hope will answer your inquiry.

When I was about 16 years old, my mother agreed to my doctor's suggestion to

treat my typical teenage acne with Tetracycline, which was common back in

the 60's. I remained on these antibiotics for about 4-5 years. I stopped using

this antibiotic in my early 20's, and began using topical preparations, which

also helped my skin condition. I stopped using ANY medications during both of

my pregnancies, and during the approximate 2-year period after each birth when

I was nursing. During those years, my skin was absolutely flawless.

As I aged, something in my system went haywire, and I began to develop an

awful case of cystic acne, which is not only disfiguring, but also extremely

painful. It afffected my face only, with occasional outbreaks on my upper

back. My doctor recommended Minocin, or Minocycline, at $2.50 a pill,

twice a day. It worked immediately, and my skin began to improve dramati-

cally. The old scarring even began to vanish. If I forgot to take just ONE dose,

however, my skin would begin to develop those horrid, red, raised, painful

cysts typical of this form of acne. There were several years where I

experimented with Retinol, Benzyl Peroxide, Renova, glycolic acid, etc. but

nothing could "tame" my outbreaks like good ol' Minocin, so I went back on it.

Since I started the Alkalarian Dietary Plan, on my own, and without notifying

my MD, I started eliminating one dose every other day, and I've had

ABSOLUTELY NO CYSTIC OUTBREAKS, or any other acne s/sx since. My

goal is to totally eliminate this antibiotic from my system within the next

month or two.

And, YES! I am completely aware of the ramifications of taking prolonged use

of ANY antibiotic. Without feeling the need to go into my ENTIRE medical

history, I chose my former long-term use of antibiotics and my new-found

"release" from its dependency to illustrate the profound effect that the

Alkalarian way of eating and drinking has already had on me. My hope was

that the readers of this column would see just one way in which this

dietary plan has personally affected me.

It took almost 200 years before the medical community accepted the fact

that handwashing could prevent the spread of infection. My hope is that it

won't take quite that long for this century's medical professionals to

understand how over-acidification of the body contributes to many common

disorders, and that the solution may be the Alkalarian dietary plan.

P.S. I hope my response was not too lengthy for your question - I DO tend

to go on & on & on when I write, and I'm even worse in person or on the phone!

Safiya,

You say "I have reduced my twice a day antibiotic to once a day".

I just thought - do you actually have an acute infection that needs antibiotics?

For 20 years?

Everyone knows now that massive over-use of antibiotics has led to the bugs becoming increasingly resistant, but as a Biochemist I know that this was actually known over 40 years ago, and nothing was done about it.

If they were going to work for you, surely they wouldn't need 20 years to have an effect.

Best wishes anyway,

Stewart

P.s. If you know anyone who is fed up with wearing glasses or contact lenses, they might be interested to know that there is a completely natural alternative. It has been known for over eighty years that short- and long-sightedness etc can be improved or eliminated by purely natural means. They might like to look at www.seeing.org , the website of the Bates Association for Vision Education.(It was Dr William Bates (1860 - 1931), an ophthalmologist himself, who made the original discoveries.)

I can, however say that I have several well-known disease processes going on in my body, two of which I inherited, and one or two others that I feelhave been a result of my inactivity and poor diet. I have alibrary of health and diet books, I've been a nurse for closeto 15 years, but

despite this, old, toxic habits are hard tobreak.I have seen at least one health problem begin to correct itself in my body. For almost 20 years I have been on a verypotent antibiotic twice a day to control my adult cystic acne.Everyone always tells me how beautiful my skin is, but theydon't realize that I've been taking medication that has apossible link to the development of breast cancer, which alsoruns in my family. Since I've made some changes in my diet,I have reduced my twice a day antibiotic to once a day, and Iwas fully prepared for a massive outbreak, but that didn'thappen! The amazing thing is that I'm not fully on this planyet, but every day, my body is giving me little hints to stayon the plan. For example, I LOVE Dunkin' Donuts coffee, andhave been used to drinking a cup a day at least, and more whenI'm at work. I gave up coffee two months ago, but last weekendI had a

ferocious craving for coffee. I dug around in mycupboard and found a sealed Folger's coffee bag (looks like ateabag), poured in the hot water and Stevia sweetener, took afew sips and promptly began to feel sick to my stomach! Thecoffee tasted bitter, and my stomach began to protest after afew minutes. I didn't have to read about why coffee is notgood for the me - my body let me know in its own way.And that's what will happen when you start the Alkalariandietary plan. Please do look into purchasing those books,Krista - you may feel more comfortable reading about thetruly miraculous health claims if you know that a doctorand a microbiologist can support those claims with theirresearch, and trust me, you will be AMAZED!!P.S. For all the women members of this holistic health group who are interested in the link between breast

cancer and the prolonged use of antibiotics, I refer you to www.gyncancer.com, the website of a doctor in California, I believeYours in health, Safiya

Dear Safiya,

Many thanks for your reply, it was most interesting.

That's horrifying, the way they used to dish out tetracyclines in those days.

We were taught that they should only be used in emergency, as they seriously interfere with protein synthesis.

But your diet does seem to be working, I'll certainly look at the site.

(Anything must be better than Atkins!)

Best wishes,

Stewart

Dear Stewart,

While appreciating the interesting exchange of views between you and

Safiya, may I remind you that some members who are on email will be

troubled by the long mails generated by not trimming the original

mails when replying. I know that I too forget sometimes.

Best wishes.
