hi..hoping someone can recommend help for me. I was diagnosed with

a degenerative disk in my back about a year ago. I am undergoing

therapy from a new physical therapist and his opinion is that the

intense pain I am having is being caused by years of perhaps calcium

building up where the disk has been degenerating. Nothing I can do

about that apparently but I must do something about the pain. I

have a scrip for Loratab but do not want to become dependent on

these drugs. I need something that can get me through day to day

until this therapy helps...according to the therapist this could

take months.

Anyone have any suggestions??

I have had 3 back surgeries. My L5S1 was herniated pretty bad. The only way to solve you problem is to have surgery. I went through chiropractors, therapy, the whole 9 yards. But my fusion never took after 3 surgeries so I now live on morphine (MS Contin). Holistically there was nothing that helped me, that was how severe th epain is. When your disc is herniated it is putin pressure on the spinal nerves and maybe also the siatic nerve that runs down your leg. Because I had waited so long to do the surgeries, I lived with it for 12 years, I have alot of nerve damage.

I hope you are seeing a neurologist for this problem. They are the ones that can help the most. But for me , the ony answer was to have surgery. I was to the point where I couldn't walk at all so I had no choice. Please don't let it get that point for you. The day will come when my spine is going to collapse. I also now have herniated discs throughout my spine in my cervical and thoriac areas.

Good luck and hang in there.

Blessings,Natalie

Dear Patty,

Reiki (hands on, not distant healing atleast in the beginning) will

help you. Has an X-ray been taken? If calcium deposits are there, they

will come up in X-ray. Pl. do consult a doctor first.

If a surgery is not needed in the near future, homeopathy will help you.

Blessings and best wishes.

Only persons who have this pain can truly know how it wrecks life.

Seek out accupuncture. Be in no hurry for surgery. I have had

several months where my life was in bed... even sitting is PAIN. A

friend of mine had told me early on not to accept surgery. Look

around and ask questions.

As for neurologist, they can give injections into tthe area. I have

had many of these. On the one hand some were helpful, BUT when I

chose not to accept any more the dr got mad at me. Long term use of

steroids can induce rage...etc. Not to mention the hours and hours

of pain, makes a person crabby and mean. Only those who have walked

this trail can truly know what it is like.

My big thing, is CHOICES. From day 1, I have wanted choices.

Also- I have found drs say as little as possible. So I did alot of

my own research.

There are times when the pain is not there for me. As I must have

made some progress in the past few years. But there are times when

the only way to deal with it is to be so drugged up, I dont care.

Unfortunely thats not always an option.

If I could access accupunturte every day, I would.

Wishing you all the best-

Hal

Long time use of steroids will cause degenerative disc disease worse. Steroids actually eat away at bone. The injections are rhizotomy. I had four at once done. What they actually do is deaden the nerves in that area so you don't feel the pain. Pain is an indicator that something IS wrong. You'll feel like a new person after this procedure after about a week of having it doen but you must remeber to becareful.

Acupuncture does work also but you have to have it done every so often and some insurances are now paying for some of the bill. Also I have a corsette with metal strips in the back of it htat go along each side of my spine for support. That has helped me alot too and reminds me not to bend over at the waist to bend at my knees.

Back pain does effect one's life tremendoulsy and surgery should be a last resort. It took me until I had to crawl around the house on my hands and knees before I would aloow surgery and even after having 3 of them I am screwed. Get many opinions from neurologist, as many as you possible can get and go from there. Now they have where they only have to make a small incision. Mine was done 7 years ago and the incision is about 10 inches long my spine.

Good luck and God bless.

I well know what you mean about the evil of steroids.

The use of them for eczema, and the resulting change of personality, nearly wrecked my marriage and business last year.

Bach flower remedies do not address symptoms, but underlying emotions.

They can have wonderful effects.

You can find out more at www.centre@...

They have a list like this.

Very best wishes,

Stewart

Dear Hal and other friends,

Sai Ram. While Acupunture is certainly helpful, pl. be careful about

infection!!! My colleague was mentioning today only how his

sister-in-law got infected. And I read similar stories earlier too.

Acupressure, Reiki, Bach Flowers, Homeopathy.... there are plenty of

choices.... Hal, you wanted choices.

With best wishes,

Swamy
