Guest guest
Sai Ram. Today is World Heart Day! Changing life styles like too much sugar, highly refined foods, too much salt and too little fiber, too much stress and lack of physical exercise have increased the risk of heart problems to a majority of people. Now a days, even people of just 25 years age are getting heart attacks! And women, who were earlier considered protectd are also getting affected! Stress comes from several factors, including too much competition in education, lack of parental and sibling support (now a days, small family is the norm and children don't have enough siblings to play with!), too much stress from career aspirations.... Food contributes a lot to the body's stress. Unrefined foods have become unfashionable and the food served in eateries or available in supermarket shelves is certainly not what is good for the body. Modern food lacks roughage and fiber. It also contains too much sugar (which causes the triglyceride and cholesterol problems) and too much salt (which causes hypertension, one of the leading risk factors for heart health). Thus hypertension, diabetes and other life-style diseases like heart disease also set in. Genetic factors also play an important part and Indians are genetically at much higher risk compared to other ethnic groups. Apart from all the above, lack of love and anger (OK, they are two sides of the same coin, isn't it? How can we be angry at some one whom we love?) play a major role in heart problems. People who are lonely are found to be much more at risk than people who are in good relationship. Though modern medical advnaces help heart patients lead a better life through medical and surgical intervention, all health professionals including the heart doctors and surgeons are united in advising that prevention of the problem is better than trying to cure it. Life style clinics are available in almost all metros and all media (print and electronic) carry enough information and case studies to convince all of us to change before it is too late! In conclusion, all of us should actively look at our present life style, identify the risk factors and work to eliminate those so that we have excellent heart health. Simultaneously, taking up positive life style changes such as aerobic exercise like walking, swimming, running etc., yoga, dancing, and destressing through arts (music, poetry, painting...) and taking help of Reiki, Armatheapy etc., will improve our chances of living into a ripe old age with a healthy, loving heart. With best wishes, Swamy in search of truth and with prayers to Govinda to help reach that goal in this life itself, and with best wishes to you that your goals may be reached, yours sincerely,
