Hello, everyone

A friend of mine has been told he needs back surgery to correct

problems caused by two herniated disks in his back.

He went to an M.D. recommended by his family and has scheduled the

surgery for March 7. He would like to look into alternatives, but

doesn't know where to turn.

Do any of you have any information that I could pass on to my fried,

Eric?

Thanks for your help,

Suzanne

Try chiropractic. If your friend has not tried chiropractic, he should. I

work for a chiropractor.

A few years back (about 1994) I clipped an article out of the New England

Journal of Medicine. It said that the AMA advised people to try

chiropractic treatments for back problems before they result to surgery. It

is a fact that in many cases herniated discs can be adjusted back into place

through chiropractic treatments. Of course, you probably won't find this

article taped to an MD's wall in the lobby.

Just a suggestion.

I have three or four herniated disks in my back, I had the first one in 1985 (tripped in a chipmunk hole). The pain was so intense that my doctor tried pain med (tylenol 3) went through a bottle every day to no relief, went into the hospital trying traction to no relief. He sent me home saying surgery was my only alternative. Well I went to the chiropractor that week. Yes, it was painful, but after a month of treatments the pain lessened to tolerable and with ongoing adjustments has been so. I have arthritis in the spine but the dr. cant say that wouldnt have happened because I have had it since in my body since I was 8. My Dr. told me recently (I have occasional instances of sciatia nerve problems) that as long as I didnt have ongoing numbness in more than a toe and I haven't lost control of any urinary or bowel function that the disks can go on like this without the surgery. I Have been told by some who have had the surgery that it has been a miracle because now they move without pain, but I have also known others who have had the surgery and ended up in a wheel chair. I guess it comes down to a personal choice. But if I can hold out without surgery and occassional trips to the chiropractor I will do so. Tell your friend I wish him well.

HI, Geesh I am behind on emails, this has probably been answered. I had 2 herniated discs. All ortho's wanted to do surgery. I went to a physiatrist-spelling may not be right. Basically he believes in physical therapy. That should have been the first thing that was recommended. I went to Health South for 6 months 8 hours a day. My back is great. You can not see the herniation on a MRI anymore and I have been studying martial arts for years now. HTH

I also ruptured a couple of disks and pieces of them lodged in the main nerves going to my legs. My doctor was talking surgery to take these out. I asked him what would happen if I did not have surgery, he said they would just dissolve. Well I didn't walk a lot for 6 months, used lavender oil mixed with Arnica gel every day for a month but I avoided surgery and I have been free of pain. There are activities I will never do again and I just don't lift anything over 5 pounds but I can walk and drive and garden. Patients is the key, it may take months but its time well spent at least it was for me. Donna
