That's how one HSI member describes his experience in an HSI Forum thread titled "Colonoscopy." And a member named Jack writes: "I just had one two weeks ago and it was a snap." If you've never had a colonoscopy, you might read these comments and wonder if you're missing out on a delightful medical procedure. But a member named Omie wonders if a positive experience is actually the exception. Omie says, "When my mother had one done as part of an exam at a clinic in Santa Barbara, she was caused a great deal of pain and said she would never have one done again." That doesn't sound like a "snap." And in response, Jack posts this comment: "I guess I shouldn't have said it is a snap. As anytime doctors start probing ones body there is certain dangers. As with any procedure tell your doctor that you want more info on it." That's very good advice. But your doctor may not be able to give you the patient's perspective, which is exactly what you'll find in the Colonoscopy thread - both the good and the bad. For instance, a member named Warren describes his two colonoscopies as "uneventful" (even though polyps were found and removed in both cases), and he adds: "The worst part of the procedure is the fasting and cleansing the night before." Several others agree with Warren's opinion about the preparation. A member named Joni had problems with a medication that caused constipation; a condition that has to be addressed before a colonoscopy can begin. Which is why a member named Rosie recommends more than just a cleansing the night before. Rosie writes: "I suggest you try preparing for this test a month or so in advance. Start by changing your diet completely." Another aspect of the cleansing is dehydration, which Rosie also comments on: "It [the preparation] flushes out all your water soluble nutrients, which electroytes are. And magnesium is one of those electrolytes. This is another catch 22, as magnesium is needed for all muscle contractions, including the intestines. This is why magnesium citrate is a laxative. But, you must have all the electrolytes in the proper balance, so to take huge amounts of one causes severe losses of the others." If you've never had a colonoscopy and would like to get a "been there, done that" point of view, this thread offers many real-world insights into preparation, cleansing agents, drug use, and recovery. And you can be sure that there's quite a bit of information here that your doctor will never tell you.
