Genetic Engineering

Dear all,

I am a member of the Organic Consumers Association and am fighting

to keep Organic Foods pure foods. At the moment, the food supplies and

ALL PLANTS on this planet are at risk. Genetic Engineering is proceeding

at a fast pace. It is unchecked and unhindered by Governments. This is

allowing chemical companies such as Monsanto, to produce Terminator

seeds which are infertile seeds. This means the farmer planting

Terminator wheat will be unable to retain a portion of his crop for

planting next year and will be forced to buy new seed from the chemical

giants. Little thought has gone into the fact that third world farmers

cannot afford to buy seeds, or that these seeds will combine with the

original wild wheat that was the " mother " of the plant we now use,

producing a sterile plant in the wild.

Monarch Butterflies die on eating the pollen of genetically

engineered crops.

Potatoes, with a DNA that includes a pesticide, will not be eating

by 'bugs' but are happily put on to our grocery shelves. What will the

toxins in the potato do to our internal bacteris? Who knows?

Many years ago, whilst pregnant with my first child, I was

hopelessly sick about once a minute. I was offered a new wonder drug by

my doctor that was totally safe which would totally eliminate morning

sickness. It was approved by the FDA. I look, today. at my daughter,

whole in limb, and am forever grateful that I did not take thalidomide.

I NEARLY DID!! Many of those who did produced deformed children.

The moral of my story? That it is up to US to determine that our

food is safe. We cannot leave it to a governmental Organisation and

then, years later, find out that they were incorrect in their

evaluations.
