Guest guest
Was just looking this up in the archives and will probably be trying it tonight! Hmm....Wonder if I could convince my grandma to try it? She's taking calcium suppliments (nasal membrane delivery...yeek!) for osteo and has trouble with nose bleeds now. Anyway, my mom can get limes for free where she works and was wondering if lime juice could be substituted for lemon? Thanks. After spending hourse idly combing the archives, I can see this is a valuable resource list! Hope
Guest guest
I just got rid of my 17 chickens, and when I first saw the Lemon egg recipe, I couldn't get past thinking about the chicken poop I had to wash off some of my eggs, then I was thinking e coli, and just couldn't get past all that...I mean doesn't anybody else think about this, or does everyone think the eggs are ultra sanitary like in the store?? I am getting two chickens, because thats all I feel we need now. But really, its gonna take a while to get to the lemon egg recipe for me!!!! Chickens are nasty critters. I was told to just wash the eggs off with water. That doesn't sanitize them. Theres pores in the egg, right?(Shudder) Elaine - Hope Martin herbal remedies Thursday, January 25, 2001 4:25 PM [herbal remedies] Lemon Eggs Question Was just looking this up in the archives and will probably be trying it tonight! Theres pores in the egg, right?(Shudder) > Elaine Elaine, I certainly understand your aversion -- chicken poop is great garden fertilizer, but I wouldn't eat the stuff! ;-) However, citrus of any sort, or vinegar, will kill E. coli, salmonella and just about any other bacteria you can think of, on contact. Health care workers in third world countries teach the people to clean their fish, poultry, meat, hands and food prep surfaces with citrus juice or vinegar to destroy pathogens. I use vinegar to clean my kitchen, especially when we occasionally have fish or seafood (we're largely vegetarian). So the full-strength lemon juice that the eggs are soaking in is going to kill anything that is still on them after you wash them. It'll also kill strep bacteria in your throat, if you get infected and can stand to gargle with it! Peace, Laura
Guest guest
Laura, thank you so much for telling me about the lemon juice. Okay, I can definitely deal with it in that light. I didn't know the lemon juice was capable of killing e coli...etc. HUGS Elaine - mamalaura herbal remedies Friday, January 26, 2001 12:44 PM [herbal remedies] Re: Lemon Eggs Question > I just got rid of my 17 chickens, and when I first saw the Lemon egg recipe, I couldn't get past thinking about the chicken poop I had to wash off some of my eggs, then I was thinking e coli, and just couldn't get past all that...I mean doesn't anybody else think about this, or does everyone think the eggs are ultra sanitary like in the store??
