Hey there --

I'm about to inherit 3 chickens and wanted a little herbalist advice from those

of you who keep the critters. I have a friend who raises chickens and sells the

eggs, and she uses commercial feed, terramycin in their water, and all sorts of

other hideous stuff. I don't want to go that route.

These are mongrel chickens (2 hens and a rooster) but enormously healthy, being

5th generation organically raised, and I would like to keep them that way. I

spent a lot of my growing-up time on my grandparents' farm, so I know the basics

about how to take care of them, but I would like to feed them something healthy

and organic. I grow corn and soybeans, and have tons of greens of all sorts,

and can mix eggshells into their feed. Will that do, or do I need to add

something else? I know they need about 20% protein, but the soybeans should

take care of that. And what if they get sick -- has anyone ever " herbaled " a

chicken? Ian, I

know you have your own chickens -- what do you feed them?

Thanks for any advice!

Laura

Our chicken had an accident in the yard somehow and broke her leg, actually

it came out of socket at the hip and I did my best to put it back and

wrapped it up, kept her in a cage for 1 month in the house babying her.

She has been back outside for 1 month and has a slight limp but is just

fine.

That's my chicken story!

Also some place do sell Organic feed.

God Bless,

Jamie
